I've read and greatly enjoyed Bill Shunn's memoir of his extremely eventful time as a Mormon missionary in Canada - "The accidental terrorist: confessions of a reluctant missionary" and so was very keen to read this extended short story on a similar topic. Bill paints a picture of young men tortured by their endless, thankless task and proselytising without conviction and their treatment of captive mice and other creatures is an apt metaphor for their own situation. Their day-to-day existence is bleak and joyless; and then the dilemma which must be a feature of every mission - is it right to preach to and attempt to convert a person for whom it's entirely inappropriate and who is almost certainly not able to give proper consideration to it - is illustrated in spades when they meet Minnie.
If I have a criticism, it's that it's just not long enough. I want more.
