Sometimes you read a book that not only stands out in its genre, but stands out in other ways. I started reading "After Life" because I wanted to read a great horror story. And that is exactly what I got. Mr. Knuth has written a tale of the undead here that not only grips the imagination, but makes you feel like you are a part of the outbreak. From weaving thru zombie masses clogging the interstate, to raiding corpse-filled apartments for supplies, I was on the edge of my seat and read this in one sitting. I couldn't stop. And the book is not a quick read, at least to me. I found the descriptions of the dire situations the characters had to face vivid and their reactions always realistic, always genuine. This was best illustrated when the characters witness walking corpses attacking and killing patrons outside a diner who soon re-animate themselves. The way their reactions are written shows you the look on their faces as they watch. Sacrifice is made in the name of love that haunted me throughout the book. And that brings me to the bonus this book offers. The underlying love story between the two main characters is so well written it could stand alone by itself. The thoughts that go on inside the head of Alex took me back to times I had experienced my own unrequited love, and the way he acted was spot on.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the horror/zombie genre, and to anyone that loves a great love story. 5 Stars. I will definitely be reading Mr. Knuth's other books.

I'm not really into Zombie books but this one goes a bit past the mindless running from brain dead critters. It incorporates a bit of human on human betrayal, the angst of a world view changing crisis and has a decent amount of protagonist inner turmoil and a somewhat happy ending in the love story. What it did not do was focus on the munching/crunching of the zombies beyond the intermittent chase scenes.

In my view, it did show the ineffectiveness of the governmental response in the early part of the book but then that's a common theme in most genre of books anyway, isn't it? :).

I did enjoy it and I think you will too.

Hopefully when the zombie apocalypse happens, you will be lucky enough to have the day off work. If Alex, a Wal-Mart employee had been at work, he would not have been able to ride things out with his long-time crush/best friend Morgan. While trying to stay alive, teaming up a few other survivors, and fighting the undead some interesting things happen.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys zombie fiction. It`s a surprisingly quick read and really enjoyable.

Just like most other zombie stories out there these days, this book had its ups and downs. Let's get the "downs" out of the way: 1) The leading male character seemed wishy-washy to me--brave one minute, whiny the next; 2) Some of the character development wasn't as strong as it could have been--some of them I couldn't relate to very well because I couldn't get a good "feel" for them; 3) I agree with other reviewers in that the Walmart portions were somewhat hard to swallow.

So, why the 4 star review? I feel that this book was very aptly named "After Life." Not only do you have the dead that inevitably become the undead, but you also have an exploration of what happens to the survivors after life as they know it is completely obliterated. The author, I feel, did a good job of showing the progression of human emotion--or lack thereof--following a life-altering, world changing event. It's a story line that I don't see too often in the blood-and-gore world of typical zombie novels, and I could really appreciate the different approach.

Overall, I recommend this book. To me, the physical and emotional action work well together.

Ok, first I have to admit I might be a little biased since I live in MN and it was fun reading about locations I've been to, but regardless of that this is one of the best zombie books I've read in a long time. The story is good, the characters are well rounded and believable, there are very few typos (which can ruin a good book), I was surprised by the plot a few times, and it was just a lot of fun to read. I wasn't thinking to myself that the characters were making dumb decisions or that something improbable happened. I ended up reading this straight through and staying up way past my bedtime just because I wanted/needed to see what happened next. So my suggestion is to give yourself plenty of time to read this story as you won't want to put it down.

In a sea of zombie apocalypse books, After Life stands out as a well-written story more about the human condition than the mindless horrors that await the living. Jaron Lee Knuth is am up-and-coming writer, who in my opinion gains some serious cred for this book. Great characters, situations and descriptions of a world gone Undead!

This book was well written as all Knuth books are. It stays interesting and captivating all the way through. I wish it had been longer just because I enjoyed it so much. A nice zombie read without too much gore, and a sweet little story inside!
