Review

***** "The blend of crime, romance and comedy make this book a pleasure to read. A credit to Clark is her ability to switch pace with ease and take us from the breakneck speed and suspense of the mystery to the sensual world of love, lust and desire.
This book is smart, edgy and full of interesting characters that not only entertain but show us the dark side of human nature and how the desire for fame and fortune can lead to venality and a corrupt sense of what is right and wrong." by Angie R. S.

**** "After Midnight" by Kathy Clark is a very exciting romantic thriller with strong, likable characters. This is a very convincing book with realistic, complex characters, detailed and atmospheric settings and a plausible, powerful plot. The action is fast-paced but the author takes time to reveal the people in her novel fully. Clark creates a thrilling adventure that goes in directions you don't expect and which keeps you on the edge of your seat. She portrays tension and fear as well as tenderness and trust." Stephanie Dagg for Readers Favorite

REVIEWED BY EMILY

Kathy Clark's AFTER MIDNIGHT starts out with a bang - almost literally. We meet our police officer hero, Sam Morgan, while on his nightly rounds and escorting a man on a ridealong. Within pages he finds himself shot and his old partner dead after stopping to check on what he thinks is a hooker and her pimp. The pimp who had shot Sam's old partner is also killed in the fray by the ridealong guest, who is actually a reporter.

As a quick aside, these words are not really in my daily vocabulary, so if "pimp" and "hooker" are too "Pretty Woman" or "Cagney & Lacey," I apologize! I'm sure there are better words I could use (street walker? roxanne? lady of the night?) but I am at a loss! Sorry, I digress...

Anyway, we find out that the hooker Sam saw is not really a hooker, but rather a struggling actress hired to play the part of a hooker. Kate McKinney, the actress, is as confused about the dead cop and dead pimp as Sam is, but they are determined to try to figure out what happened, and to do it together. Pretty soon two things become apparent: 1) Someone is out to get Kate and 2) Kate and Sam have some pretty serious chemistry.

I had high hopes in the beginning of this book. It started out fast-paced and I liked both of the main characters. Unfortunately, I had pretty much solved the mystery by the middle of the book, and spent the latter half wanting to shake Kate and Sam whilst screaming, "It was so-and-so, you dummies!" The hemming and hawing that was done in solving the crime and in the relationship between Kate and Sam dragged on too long and I lost interest in both somewhere along the way.

One other issue I had was that there seemed to be too many side stories that were suddenly brought up without reason or warning.

I love books that start off by throwing you right into the action and After Midnight did not disappoint in that regard. That being said, the whole book just fell a little flat for me.

Sam is a Denver police officer that loves patrolling the streets at night. He's out doing his nightly rounds when his ride-along points out a hooker and suggests they stop. What should have been a quick, routine stop turns into a lot more than anyone bargained for, leaving two people dead and Sam in the hospital.

Kate is an actress in Denver that's supposed to be playing the role of a hooker for an easy $100 cash. Except when bullets start flying and her "pimp" and a cop end up dead, she's not sure what she's supposed to do. Wracked with more guilt than she can handle, she visits Sam in the hospital but leaves when he doesn't believe her that she's not a real hooker.

Eventually Sam finds out who Kate really is and after they get past the initial hooker awkwardness they end up in a tentative relationship which quickly escalates when they realize that Kate's in danger. There's a lot that happens to Kate in such a short amount of time but Sam remains her rock throughout it all.

Of course their relationship is questionable because of everything that's been happening and neither is sure where it will lead once the danger dies down but there is one chapter where Sam's ex shows up out of nowhere and I really could have done without that. I mean, she was there which had Kate questioning how Sam really felt, then it wasn't brought up again... I just didn't understand the significance and that really bugged me.

Then, of course, we have the villain who was so obvious to me that it was a little disappointing.

After Midnight tells a tale of cops with guns where injuries are real, people die, and the walking wounded don’t get straight up from their sickbeds to fight again. But Sam is determined to find out why his friend died, and there’s definitely something strange about the hooker-who’s-not-a-hooker.

“Car nine, out of service. End of watch. We thank you for your sacrifice...” Powerful words, powerfully portrayed in a funeral that stays with the reader, giving depth and sincerity to this tale. Tragic circumstances are offset with the delightful humor and genuine affection of pitch-perfect dialog, as Sam falls in love, his siblings tease, and a beautiful woman finds her life in danger.

Great characters, great romance, sensual sex scenes, intriguing mystery (yeah, I guessed, but that’s me), and a cool location (made all the better since I’d just visited Denver for the first time before reading)... After Midnight is a fast enjoyable read for mature readers.

Disclosure: I found it when it was free and I’m sorry it took so long to get around to reading it.

Author does her characterizations well enough, but plotting leaves a lot to be desired. The shero is a fledgling actress, making it on her own, because rich daddy doesn't approve of chosen profession. Our hero is a nice guy, hunky cop, and one of three brothers all who serve and protect in Denver, as firefighter, cop, and EMT. The two meet when he stops to question her, because she's dressed as a hooker for what she's been told is a role in a television reality show. Now I willing to suspend some logic and common sense when reading fiction, but even I require a modicum of plausibility. The cop has a civilian ride along and does not know the guy is a reporter. What no basic background check? How did the bad guy meet Jameel? I could not buy the (I guess he just snapped) explanation, for Jameel going from acting bug bitten young man to enraged cop killer. As for the mystery, there was none. It very obvious who the villain was. Also, a pet peeve of mine, there is no mention of safe sex, despite the quick fall into lust. The cop, very successful guy with the ladies, who constantly professes his desire to protect her at all costs, never uses a condom. Grrr. Out of five, I give the romance three and suspense one. Would like find out about the other two brothers, yes. Would I pay to find out, no. Nuff said.
