“The first book in the Reckless Brides Trilogy is a seafarer's delight. Col and Sally's high-stakes adventure is fast-paced and fraught with peril. Well-timed humor punctuates the action and the use of frigate-speak adds authenticity to the shipboard dialog. The love story teases the reader at first, as Col and Sally struggle to conceal their attraction on board the Audacious. Then things turn desperate when the circumstances of war seem intent on driving them apart. A smartly written, emotional tempest.” ―Reader to Reader Reviews on Almost A Scandal

It is without a doubt the most lyrical, romantic, enthralling book I have read this year. I loved it so much that I'm forcing my husband to read it (The dogs aren't much for romances ) and I have to have someone to talk to about this book. 'nuph said.
I HATE to wait, September can't come too soon.
What absolutely killed me was the main characters becoming intimate within a day of knowing each other. Why it didn't work is that the h's family were beside themselves because she'd been missing and I do not believe for one minute she'd suddenly have the freedom to run around the H's house at night. I'm convinced that normal parents would have had her under lock and key somewhere and probably not in the H's house, since they thought he was the bad guy. Sorry Ms Essex you lost me when you wrote those scenes that lasted for nearly 2 chapters. Unrealistic and it spoilt the book for me.
For those who are sticklers for things like accuracy in using in titles etc, then you'll be irritated by the mistakes in this book.
I'll probably try the next book in the series.
I was just laughing to myself at a thought which I've decided to ask Elizabeth directly, since I have the great honour to do so for many fabulous writer's!
So, dear Elizabeth, since I have time and hours and days to spare since retirement should you ever be desirous of another ARC reader please contact Anne Renwick. Who will hopefully not be appalled with the bandying about of her good name. Texas should supply a clue, if needed. And while waiting I will continue to read and review as many wonderful tomes as possible, for it is one of the few habit's "I" choose not to break!
Tanner Evans is no Ordinary Duke. He lived a life on the streets as a child developing all kinds of skills which have served him well; in fact his skills have stood the test of time and are useful to the Admiralty. He has admired from afar Lady Clair Jellicoe but has not approached her, feeling he would not be worthy of her.
Lady Claire is a dutiful daughter cosseted, indulged but not unkind or self-centered. Tanner saves her from a terrible situation. Most of this book takes place within a twenty four hour period and in those hours Claire comes to really know the taciturn Duke and so does the reader. The leads find themselves investigating a murder and what an adventure Claire has.
As these two wend their way through London, Claire discovers how incredibly intelligent, resourceful and confident Tanner is. What is even more astonishing is how assured she becomes in her own abilities. Claire is so intrigued and fascinated by Tanner that her feelings become engaged quickly and believably.
Tanner is simply dreamy. Kind, considerate and altogether noble he is every woman's ideal. He respects Claire and it shows in his actions and words. Tanner has amazing observation skills and his connections to the slums of London show his generous nature. This is a man who values people no matter their station.
Claire is trustworthy and trusting and so is Tanner. This couple truly believes in each other and are not shy about standing up for each other. There is something incredibly romantic about their fierce loyalty to each other. This is a five star novel and certainly one of the best written stories this year.

What I thought going into this story was different than where it went. It was alright, but not as gripping and intriguing as I anticipated.Read more
