Jake Roberts had his vises, but generosity and being a true friend wasn’t one. Though he was very wealthy, he used this to help people that he came in contact. He knew not all his friends were dealing above the law, but when Pablo needed help rescuing his wife from a drug lord Jake had to try pulling from all his resources to help.
Richard Graham’s flare for killing people was disturbing, but I felt the author’s description was sufficient without extensive replay of hideous scenes. When Richard and Jake finally addressed the common link they shared they knew one, or both, were not going to walk away from that room.
Jake’s retirement won’t last long however, as an old friend is in need of help. Pablo’s wife has been snatched by a psychotic drug lord and Pablo needs Jake’s help if she is to be saved. To make matters worse, the kidnapper is related to Caitlyn’s murderer.
Unlike many novels, this starts with action that pulls you into the story right away. The fast paced tone of the book makes the reader anxious to keep going just to know what will happen next. Fans of Hannibal Lecter, will see vestiges of similarities to the escaped convict, Richard. Some sections may be difficult for some readers as they are gory and intense.
If this is your first book in the series, you will want to read the others. Cary Allen Stone is a fantastic writer and his writing style will appeal to lovers of action. Unfortunately, I was only able to give this novel 4 stars since I am unable to give 4.5 stars on the site.
A small group of mental patients -- the most depraved kind -- burst into blood lust killing staff in an animalistic frenzy. Thus, the pace of the novel is set, a stew of human flesh that must be stopped.
A depraved psychopathic killer joins forces with a drug lord who is equally sadistic and depraved. This is the scenario Jake Roberts faces, to mount a rescue, one that is a twisted puzzle and appears to be impossible, but Jake is not an ordinary person. He is a tough ex-cop with integrity and honor, damaged goods perhaps, with a conscience and regard for others, but not above dirty tricks for the right reasons.
This suspenseful novel of good vs evil, in which finely honed characters come alive, moves at speed to a power punch ending.
The novel is laced with action, violence, wickedness and its opposites: concern and decency. The on-the-edge plot is riveting: figuratively, from swamp to highland. Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil.
