Upon opening the shipping box, I was amazed to find what I can only describe as the best packaging that I have ever seen on a product. I know it has nothing to do with the product, but it does instill some confidence when the box is rivaled only by the latest flagship phones, complete with a magnetic latch to hold it closed. Needless to say, it went on the shelf.
Ok, on to the actual product.
Material (8/10): The headphones have what I would describe as velvety feel to them, not really plastic and not rubber, just firm with a soft warm texture. The headphone band is a bit hard and does not flex very much. This is not really a con, but takes some getting used to when sleeping with the headphones.
Charging (10/10): The proprietary charging system is one of the nicest features of these headphones. The cable terminals are surrounded by strong polarized magnets. There is no connector to insert or break, just get the cable within 1/2" of the charging port, and it snaps in place and holds on tight in the correct orientation. There is no concern of inadvertently connecting the charging cable backward, or damaging the connector.
Sound Quality (7/10, but please read): This was not a big driver for me, since I usually use them with white noise or something that doesn't require high quality. Due to the method that the sound is transferred from the transducer into the bone, I feel that the sound quality is excellent for how they work. If you are planning to compare them to the latest $300 active noise cancelling headphones, you might be slightly disappointed. Music sounds good, but you may miss some minute details, if you are into that.
Microphone (10/10): I have currently only used this feature once, to speak with a service technician while I was on a bike ride in heavy traffic. I don't know how I sounded to him, but he had no problems hearing me clearly through the 25mph wind vehicle noise.
Battery life (10/10): Other dedicated sleep headphones that I have tried didn't even make it 6 hours overnight. I have yet to drain the battery on the AfterShokz Aeropex. The battery is stated to last 8 hours, but I was skeptical, expecting that this would be based on a low volume. I wear earplugs with them and have them turned up rather high. They have made it through every 8-hour night that I have used them. Once I forgot to charge them before the next night, and topped them up for about 20 minutes before bed and they made it through another full night. I hit the volume button the next morning and they still had medium battery left!
Sleep comfort (5/10): These are not made specifically for sleeping and take some experimentation to make work. The band that connects the two sides sticks out quite a bit behind your head, and I thought it would make back sleeping difficult. Fortunately, if you rotate the band up against your head before laying down, it works quite well, and doesn't move the sound pads off of the cheek bone too much. If you use a firm pillow, side or stomach sleeping can be uncomfortable due to the thickness of the sound pads. I was able to make both work by using a softer pillow that can accommodate the pads without much discomfort.
Noise Masking (10/10): When worn in conjunction with good earplugs, these things are amazing. First, the earplugs block out most noise. The AfterShokz introduce sound into your cheek bones, which reverberates behind the earplugs, pretty much masking every sound in existence. I would not recommend this if you live alone, as you may not hear a smoke alarm, gun shot, or truck running through your house. In all seriousness, I have not woken up once from snoring or talking in the last few weeks since I purchased these. With earplugs and the best external sleep headphones or noise canceling headphones, I would routinely wake up several times each night.
I was not finding any reviews that discussed the important points that I was looking for regarding good sleep headphones, so hopefully this review helps anyone who is looking for the same thing. I may end up purchasing a second pair as a backup to use on my bicycle commute just so I never have to go another night without these.

I think it's important to understand what these headphones offer. They aren't perfect, they aren't necessarily for every situation, but I've found I use them ALL THE TIME - at work, walking around the shops, using my bbq, at the gym. I don't feel rude, because I'm not isolated, I can communicate with people easily. These are liberating. Think of how you feel when you're listening to music playing from speakers vs when you're listening through in-ear headphones. That's the experience, but the big difference is that you're not making anyone else listen to it with you! It's as big of a game-changer as Bluetooth headphones, easily.
Battery life: 10 hours battery is pretty epic. Once you get below 20% you do get an annoying "Charge me" audio prompt every 5 mins or so. Most truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds are in the 3-6 hours range, so these are very competitive. The magnetic charging cable is very effective.
Sound Quality: I really like the sound quality. You don't get thumping bass (more of a tap) and there are definitely some frequencies that struggle, but the overall experience is brilliant once you are used to it. There's still a lot of rich detail. Vocals and strings sound warm and rich and treble is definitely present and fairly detailed. You get decent mids and if you turn them up you can 'feel' the music with a bit of vibration in your cheek (tickle). The sound stage is my favourite part. Having your ears open really opens up the sound stage and you get an epic stereo effect.
Earplugs: The included earplugs are garbage. If you're listening to music in a loud area, you won't be able to hear much at all. I use Comply Earplugs (made for musicians). They do allow some outside sounds in but reduce the volume greatly. Aeropex has two equalizer modes (one for earplugs and one for open ears). When you switch to the right EQ, there's actually a lot of detail there and they once again sound pretty decent - still a little warm, but decent.
Sound Leakage: I have tested around several people and nobody has been able to hear what I'm listening too.
Comfort: When I run, I don't hear the thump of my footsteps as I did with in-ear headphones. They are light and waterproof, so you can wear them anywhere. Doesn't matter if you sweat or get wet (I've worn them in the shower). You might find that you need to re-adjust them now and again. I find the sound is richest when they're closer to my tragus (I had to google that too). They don't move too much, even when you run.
Bluetooth connection: Better than Elite Active 65T. I found with those, that the signal passing through my body meant it dropped (think phone in pocket). I haven't had any connection issues with these.
In summary, if you have an open mind and love to listen to music and podcasts, I cannot recommend these enough. If you ride a bike or run, this is a clear no-brainer.
I wear my cycling helmet and sunglasses with the headphones. Easy to adjust the volume up/down and turn on/off. They come with two sets of charging cords (unique magnetic attachment to charge at the headphone base and then connect to standard USB port/charger), a soft case, a set of earplugs and the headphones themselves. I have had no issues with battery life; my rides aren't too long currently (1.5 hrs or so) and they have lots of charge remaining afterwards.
I use them when out running too. One use case that I originally did not think about was to use them when cutting the lawn as I can listen to music but also put in a pair of earplugs and block out much of the noise from the mower. Light to wear and I have had them on when out shopping and forgot I was even wearing them them if I had turned off the music.
I bought these on my own. If you found this review helpful please click 'helpful' to let me know!

Bad points
Frequency response; Having tried tried several positioning options, the result is always the same; awful frequency response (no bass, very little top end, thin mid range).
Environmental disturbance
The external noise bleed is excessive, to the point of being annoying to those in close proximity, perfect for the sodcasters.
Comfort
The rear band connecting the two transducers is useless for those with long hair, cannot be adjusted and excessive tingling experienced at medium at high volumes.
App integration
There is no app, so tonal correction available.
The good points
None I can think of apart from re-gifting
The box opening experience is incredible, the packaging is premium and the headphones feel very high end.
For me the only things which let this product down are the operating sounds and voice, it screams budget when you first switch them on and it instantly devalued the experience. I just hope Shokz have changed this on their top tier open run pro as I would have been super disappointed if I had paid £150! Pretty sure this is easily sorted by a firmware update or patch if Shokz wanted to. It’s something I would strongly suggest they look at sorting.
I would rate these 8/10 and recommend getting a pair especially at this great price!
Sound leakage is a little noticeable at the highest volumes but nowhere near as bad as I feared. Above about 75% volume there is some vibration which although a little strange is not particularly uncomfortable but I guess most people would not get anywhere near that level of volume....
I wear mine around the house as well as for running and it's easy to forget you're wearing them! They are very lightweight. Battery life seems good also :-)
For running these are quite useful. I frequently run along canal towpaths and can be pretty slow so it's useful to know if somebody is approaching from behind so that I can move out of the way and let them past :-)
Very happy!
