This is an angry, vivid, passionate film. Cinema is worse off now that Wajda, one of the truly towering greats of the form, is dead. --Glenn Kenny, The New York Times (Critics Pick)
Afterimage may depict a losing battle for one uncompromising artist, but it s also a bracing final dispatch for the uncompromising artist who survived long enough to tell of it. - Robert Abele, The Los Angeles Times
Afterimage is mounted in a classical, beautifully understated style that throughout conveys the relaxed assurance of a true master. --Godfrey Chesire, Rogerebert.comSee all Editorial Reviews

It’s there that students treat him like the “messiah of modern painting,” but university authorities and the Ministry of Culture have a differing opinion. Refusing to comply with Party regulations, the rebellious artist is eventually expelled from the university and the artists’ union. As the Communist authorities continue their efforts to ruin him, Strzeminski remains steadfast in his political and artistic convictions.
As portrayed by Polish actor Boguslaw Linda, Strzeminski has little need for companionship since he’s so devoted to his art. He’s estranged from his sculptor wife, and their teenage daughter Nika shuttles between the homes of both parents. When her mother dies, Nika goes to live with her father, but he can’t abide her for long and she eventually leaves. Rather than sentimentalize the artist’s obsession with work, Wajda celebrates his dedication and his refusal to bend to a government intent of stifling artistic freedom. Mr. Linda provides a riveting portrayal of the man, warts and all.
Bonus materials on the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack include ”Wajda by Wajda,” a 95-minute documentary made shortly before his death in which the director offers a unique perspective on his work and offers keys to understanding it. Also included is commentary by Professor Emeritus Stuart Liebman of the City University of New York Graduate Center. The film is in Polish, with English subtitles.
