Top customer reviews
The story takes the basic story from the main series and that's somewhat about where the similarities end - and I mean that in a good way. You have the love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but it's approached in a more mature way. Neither of the two women are happy with sharing and their friendship is incredibly strained at times, made even worse by the fact that there are zombies. The zombification of Riverdale is also fun, as it's interesting to see who gets turned first (other than Jughead and his dog) and who survives.
The artwork is also well done, as the artists eschew the traditional Archie style, which helps make this series its own thing. If I'm not mistaken this was AC's attempt to market their comics to a different crowd and freshen up their image, which seems to have worked for the most part. I have no doubt that this first volume will be a novelty purchase for a lot of people since that's what this was for me, but it's good enough that I'm going to check out further volumes and the Sabrina series.
Afterlife with Archie has consumed me though. I can't wait for each new issue. The love and detail in every inch of every page of this TPB is overwhelming.
The raw human emotion and tension are something that does not come easy in comics. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla have brought that in spades.
This is a book that is very hard to find in comic shops for a reason. Under appreciated by the comic community as a whole but cherished by almost anyone who has had the pleasure to find and read it.
Once I'm ready to deal with characters that are like family in a horror scenario, I'll read the rest of Afterlife with Archie. In the meantime, this is a great way to get your toes wet.
