This was a great what if story of what goes on in the after life. I am glad I just read this so soon after experiencing a loss in my life. The discovery of forgiveness for ourselves and we are not set on one path as evidenced by Janice and Suzanna in this story will resonate with everyone.

I picked this up as part of Prime Reading. I read it during a lunch break.

I'll paraphrase the plot: "An Uber driver picks up some customers who are more than meets the eye. Now she's obligated to deliver the dead to the underworld if she wants to live. Her journey will take her to hell, heaven, and everywhere in between!"

The art: (-2 Stars)

The single biggest failure of this book is the art.

The art is just so ho hum. It is very much "indie" quality and suffers from a severe lack of imagination.

The demons in this book look like they're wearing fur pants and TV makeup. The Hell is your typical desert scene with some fire and red lighting. Purgatory is the same desert scene but at night with some lights coming out of the ground. Heaven is just some golden doors with rainbows floating around. STOP DRAWING FOR TV SYNDICATION. You could do any fantastical thing you want but you draw THIS and it drags the whole story down! It takes anything the writing gives it and rips it away into drudgery!

The car can do anything it wants because it's not bound by physical rules … except no one has the imagination to actually use it. Unfortunately, the artist, Jason Loo, is suffering from the exact same problem. (-2 Stars)

The writing: (-1 Star)

The writing did manage to engage me for the whole story and pull an emotional response near the end, so the writer, Chip Zdarsky, is already doing better than the artist.

I find the angels/demons/religion bit to be hard to do because if anyone has any opinion about religion you will definitely manage to offend them. This work did its best to be non-offensive to everyone and sort of ended up being so non-offensive that it shot itself in the foot. There was nothing really terrifying or wonderful anywhere. Part of this is on the writer, who made the demons and angels so "average human" that it was hard to fear or love them … and some of this was on the artist, who made everything completely boring.

There's also some low hanging politically correct blah blah blah in here that I basically ignored because I felt the writer managed to make them more than their political correctness by giving the characters individual depth and personal struggle.

The end/epilogue felt a bit rushed, though. I felt it needed just a bit more fleshing out.

I have read this graphic novel for free via my Prime subscription.
And then bought it for real money.

I don't to that very often. But I like this a lot and I want to support the artists. In the hope they'll make more well- plotted/drawn/lettered/edited original stories.

This piece is original, contemporary, entertaining and sometimes deep. It is a completed work, but there is a neat opening at the end which lets us hope for more to come.

If you liked the "Proposition Player" comic, you will like this too.
