There are some great character arcs and a few characters such as William, who are especially fun to follow and see just what they are going to do next.
The stories keep moving and building as they connect with one another which I really enjoyed. We get a chance to know them individually and then we get to see how they interact with one another in larger groups.
There's a great moment in the book where we watch a town get overrun and we get to see how the two "leaders" of the town both viewed what happened and why completely differently from their individual perspectives before they come together in a confrontation. It's things like this that made the book such a good read.
It does end with a bit of a cliffhanger as it's book 1 of a series, so beware that it will leave you jonesing for the next one!
If you are a fan of movies like Mad Max, Terminator and I Am Legend, you'll dig Aftershock.
It's worth noting this book is clearly intended as the first of a series, with none of the stories getting anywhere near to resolution. Granted, "endings" in post-apocalyptic fiction of any kind tend to be artificial endpoints rather than the culmination of any grand quest. For the heroes and heroines of the end of the world, simply not dying is the best they can hope for.
The book could have used a good line-editor. While it starts off well enough, the spelling and punctuation errors (and even a couple of the grammar variety) get more frequent toward the end. While the story and especially the characters are enough for me to forgive, for the true pedant, that flaw might be a game-breaker.
