"This story is complex, with multiple systems of nature to consider and fantastically multifaceted characters. James Robertson has managed to create characters that are reflective of humanity, characters completely devoid of it, and the tricky ones in between. Afterworld is the first in a series (Next Life) and it sets a cracking pace for the ongoing story, with terrific action and some pretty graphic detail. The story incorporates philosophical moral discussion without getting weighed down in argument but instead utilizes the outcomes for the plot - leaving the moralizing to the reader.
Fans of dystopian fantasy and sci-fi will have something to love here, mixing elements from different genres works particularly well in this story and applies a macabre logic to the afterlife created by Robertson. Born in 1990, James G. Robertson grew up in the small town of Pratt, Kansas. He’s also lived in Texas, Missouri, and in New York where he graduated from SUNY Oswego in 2019, obtaining his bachelor's degree in political science with a theatre minor. James began writing his first book, Afterworld, in 2010. After a long hiatus, he finished Afterworld and had it published April 14th, 2020.

James plans to continue writing while working in education. He has big ambitions and plans for his series to end with over 30 publications.

If you’re looking for a fantasy novel that will bend the confines of reality while taking you on a fast paced journey through literal space and time then look no further. James. G Robertson spins an intricate web of deceit, hope and redemption as the protagonist, Leon, learns to harness his new found- undead- powers to battle an ancient evil that threatens the existence of humanity. The story weaves historical figures into it beautifully and gives one of them a rather... electrifying personality. With the ever growing threat from the dark God’s and the dwindling activity of the God’s who were said to protect humanity will Leon and his crew be able to quell the all consuming darkness that lusts after total control and will do nothing to stop from getting it?
This is a book that invokes many emotions while reading it and I wouldn’t hesitate to read again so I highly recommend this book if you love fantasy... or a good time.

Afterworld is a good narrative about a young man who faces an unexpected and perilous journey after dying in a camping accident. The novel is fast-paced and gripping, although it will make you think about the nature of life, death, and religion amongst other things. The characters are intriguing and draw you in to the narrative with their complex and mysterious world. The most glaring flaw with the book are some minor grammatical and phrasing issues that offer minor interruptions to the flow of the novel. I highly recommend this book for fans of science-fiction, fantasy, or dystopian stories.

Full of twists and turns, each chapter is its own adventure. Unpredictable and page turning, I could never figure out what obstacles Leon would encounter or what might happen next. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, it would warp into a direction that I couldn't even come up with. At times I would sympathize with the main characters and other times the villains and I asked myself what I would do in each position. Dystopia is an under statement and one I can't wait to explore further.

This is such an odd story it’s hard to rate. I will say the first bit off the gate was one of the scariest bits I’ve ever contemplated. Not gory, just terrifying.

You see, when you die you don’t go to heaven; you go to the author’s Afterworld, think of a mixture of Heaven and Hell, of gods & myths and okay, I’d rather not die, maybe?

After that killer opening the space slows down a bit but it’s still a wild ride.

Leon is dead. And as shocking as that is to him, he’s even more shocked to learn what comes after. As the truths of the universe are revealed to him, Leon must face the darkness and set out to save the universe.

This was an intriguing book. The start is intriguing and hooks you right away. The character development is very good as is the world building. There is plenty of action and suspect to keep the reader interested. The prose is written to make reading easy and effortless.

All in all, I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy novel!
