This anthology explores the question: what if science fiction were different?
These stories are different all right. Some of them are crap. Sometimes, breaking a convention just illustrates that following the convention is better than breaking it. Some of the stories are strange in ways that don't appeal to me. Ah, but plenty of these stories are both strange and beautiful or both strange and disturbing. It's worth reading through strange-bad and strange-not-to-my-taste to find these gems. And, what's more, I'll bet different readers will find different gem stories.
Ellison's introductions detract. Too many repetitions of: this story will be strange; DV was awesome and A,DV is awesome and LDV will be awesome; aren't this author and this editor just the living end? I suppose it would be hard for one man to write dozens of differently strange introductions. Still, the stories cry out for something more original to wrap around them. More strange.
