The book is a very good set of short stories from the Orion's Arm universe, but you have to be a fan of the site and have read quite a a bit of it to really appreciate the underlying depth of the stories. I would recommend this title to anyone who is already familiar with Orion's Arm, otherwise I would suggest you visit the site and read some of its content first.

"Against A Diamond Sky" is a creatively crafted collection of sci-fi stories, mingling the evolution of the Orion's Arm Project with moments of sheer imaginary genius. At times, it is almost impossible not to be drawn into the extraordinary places and situations the authors have composed; it will blow your mind." J. V. Haralovich

I've been reading science fiction for as long as I can remember, and this book certainly did not disappoint. I love authors that are able to explore new and interesting concepts, be it a society set in the distant future or aliens that are truly alien. And I can safely say that all five of the authors in this anthology are incredibly talented. Definitely pick it up!

This is a collection of stories by different authors so the plot, pace, character development, style and pretty much everything else varies incredibly. I'm giving it 3 stars because while there are some stories that are very well developed and written, some are less so, and/or have flat characters, inconsistent flow or stunted narrative. One thing in common, the Orion Arm universe figures prominently and all stories are quite consistent in referring to the key devices/themes of the Universe. Therein, however, lies the trap and downfall of some authors - some navigate the references integrating them well into the story, while not overwhelming the reader, while others rather clumsily insist to repeating and highlighting the key themes, reinforcing endlessly the basic plots about trans-human/trans-sentient AIs and reaffirming that the story is part of the Orion Arm universe project (I get it: basic human sentience can't even imagine the sentience of AIs....I don't need to read this exact reference repeated on average every page and a half....). It is a problem with any collaborative writing project, but an editor could go far to polish this and/or have a stronger filter when selecting stories.
