Richly informed and written in an engaging style, Against Empire exposes the ruthless agenda and hidden costs of the U.S. empire today. Documenting the pretexts and lies used to justify violent intervention and maldevelopment abroad, Parenti shows how the conversion to a global economy is a victory of finance capital over democracy.

As much of the world suffers unspeakable misery and the Third-Worldization of the United States accelerates, civil society is impoverished by policies that benefit rich and powerful transnational corporations and the national security state. Hard-won gains made by ordinary people are swept away.

“A valuable rebuttal to the drumbeat…from the right.” ―New York Times Book Review

“Entertainingly written.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Parenti writes clear, smooth, often provocative prose, has a way of cutting to the heart of complex issues and knows how to tell a story." ―Allan Johnson, Author of Human Arrangements

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Against Empire focuses on exposing the agenda and costs of U.S. expansion in the world and documents the lies used to justify violent intervention in world politics, considering how economics plays into political decision-making process and providing a strong case for considering past wrongs and future changes. An excellent, strong title."—Midwest Book Review

Michael Parenti gives a scathing, yet honest review of how America functions as an empire in decline. Not only does he touch on imperialism in an international sense, but he also delves into it domestically. He sums it all up beautifully in the end with practical solutions we can take to make society better and heal it from the desolation of capitalism.

Essential reading for all Americans:

Tucker Carlson says you hate America if you question the establishment. What is he referring to? I love America. I hate the crimes of the empire.

Quality of the product was superb, both in terms of content as well as aesthetic condition. Easy read. Parenti lives up to his name and steers clear of any academic pretensions. His writing is meant to be easily digested by anyone English literate. Could be skimmed through in a sitting. Enjoy!

Extremely well written! Details the way the West has manufactured a perfect system for the exploitation of the third world. This system which enriches The Western Capitalist class forces the rest of the world into poverty and prevents any way of getting out of this poverty.

There is a mythology in the united states that we are a sort of salvation army that fights bad guys and helps the needy. In fact, U.S. foreign policy serves mostly the favored few of the ruling class rather than the common people in this country and abroad. This is given no recognition in mainstream political discussion and media commentary. Thus, This book is a great framework for thinking about foreign policy.

This was my first Michael Parenti book. He is obviously a brilliant political scientist and "Against Democracy" clarified for me the reason for inconsistencies and puzzling domestic and international policies. I was especially riveted by the chapter on our learning institutions; it was only later in life I realized how my thinking was shaped. Though written in 1995, some things have not changed despite the older references.  Suggestions for needed changes are offered in the last chapter, they seem bold but have been offered since by progressive politicians and demanded by Americans. Yet, the power dynamics has not yet shifted. I would have liked more footnotes. At times, in early part of book it seemed repetitious.

This book is a must read for everyone who wants to know what's going on with the foreign wars, the "war on terror", the "war on drugs", the so called "Dept. of Defense" (which used to be called the "War Dept." and still is just that) and so many other things that just seem like (and are sometimes claimed to be) incompetence. You will be informed of these things and many more follies of US policy after you read this book!

Sling mud at Michael Parenti's work, any of it. It just doesn't stick. If anyone is a true Patriot who cares deeply about our nation's future and its (sociopaths excluded)people, it's Michael Parenti.

This book is dated in some ways but it may as well have been written yesterday. The empire still rages on. If you’re contemplating buying this book, just stick it in your basket and be done with it. Well written and engaging, sometimes filled me with horror but ultimately left me with so much to think about. Highly recommend.

The book provides a real and raw perspective of what is happening in the world. It moves beyond the spin that vested interests have on the global economy to give a crystal clear perspective on who plays what role and what's in it for them.
