Against the Waves: Christian Order in a Liberal Age Paperback – February 18, 2025
Purchase options and add-ons
Jon Harris eloquently argues for the reclamation of natural relationships, strong community bonds, and a life aligned with scriptural truths. Drawing from historical lessons, he critiques modern liberalism, the proposition nation, managerial elitism, and other ideologies that have led society away from its spiritual moorings, presenting a compelling case for why we must return to the fundamentals of faith, virtue, and service to God and neighbor.
Against the Waves is not just a critique; it's a roadmap for those yearning for truth in an era of confusion. It challenges Christians to stand firm against the cultural tides, advocating for a life of divine purpose over secular novelty. Jon even explores strategies considered unconventional like returning to liturgical calendars or nullifying tyrannical laws emanating from centralized authorities. The book provides:
- A Clear Vision: A hopeful vision of how Christian principles can restore order and meaning to our lives.
- Historical Insight: Lessons from the past that highlight the consequences of straying from divine order.
- Practical Guidance: Steps for individuals and communities to cultivate virtue and resist the pressures of a liberal society.

About the author

I grew up in a Christian home where I was taught to honor God's word and the cherished traditions passed down through generations. My faith became deeply personal at a young age, and by the time I was a teenager, the questions that often accompany this stage of life drove me to seek answers in Scripture. It was during this time that I truly experienced the transformative power of Christ in my life.
My early interests in history and politics were complemented by my involvement in both student and music ministries during my college years. It was also during this time that I discovered my passion for playing guitar and writing songs. For those who enjoy music, you can find some of my compositions online.
Outside of my academic and creative pursuits, I find joy in the great outdoors. Hiking, cycling, hunting, fishing—if it's an outdoor activity, I've either experienced it or look forward to trying it someday. These adventures provide both peace and inspiration, often shaping my perspective on life.
In 2016, I married the love of my life, and together we are building a beautiful family. This journey has enriched my life in countless ways, and I am grateful for the love and support we share.
Academically, I hold a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Southeastern Seminary (2018) and a Master of Arts in History from Liberty University (2020). These experiences have deepened my understanding of both faith and history, which you’ll often find reflected in my writing.
For more of my work, I invite you check out my podcast, music, documentaries, or books. It’s a pleasure to share my thoughts and creations with you!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA great read. So well researched and documented. Great description of the current struggle to know what time it is. Jon names the players and offers solutions. He defines the terms, gives history, and brings us back to the importance to share both civic TRUTH and God’s Word. A great choice for small Group study or personal learning. Wake up Christian America!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhat Jon lays out in this book is a roadmap to a more trusting and virtuous culture by leaning into God’s reality and loving it. He reminds us that is a good thing to enjoy nature, to care about one’s people group, or to believe and fight for principles deeper than one’s personal freedoms, — and more — because God has set these virtues in place. This book confronts the idol of at-all-costs individual liberty in a compelling way and argues for God’s order. Excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat read. I bought a copy for a friend and we are reading and discussing together. I appreciate that Jon doesn't simply identify problems without offering solutions. I especially liked 4 chapters: The Soul Of America , What Is A Nation, Act Like Men, and Power Is Not A Dirty Word.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseOnce again Jon Harris provides excellent insight and help for the contemporary evangelical church. If every Christian took to heart and acted upon what is written in this book the American Church and American society would be in a much better place to the glory of God and the betterment of the people. My prayer is that it is read by many and the improvement of society that Jon envisions will come to fruition before our eyes and our childrens before Christ returns to this earth.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025Format: PaperbackThis book is one of the best I have ever read on both the diagnosis and solution to negative trends in 21st century American culture. It deals with all 3 societal disciplines - political, sociological, and religious. The author discusses not merely the symptoms of the disease, but the root cause - a decline in the admiration of and adherence to how God created mankind and the world he occupies. It is primarily from a Christian perspective, but even if you aren't a Christian, you will find much value as it deals with aspects of how all of us live: nature, politics, family, and even gender. If you come from the paleoconservative political school, you will find it very encouraging as this will echo your sentiments like few books have had in your lifetime. If you are a Christian, you will find also find encouragement in that there is hope even on this side of Heaven for a restoration of the moral and family values you hold dear. The author is an outstanding historian, and is very careful and fair in his research. Highly recommended.
