First off, this is indeed a text version of the Agatha Heterodyne webcomic. The webcomic is glorious (yes, I am a fanboi) in its story, its intricacy and its artwork - I can't recommend Studio Foglio highly enough. The webcomic is a very complicated and interwoven story, extremely engaging and entertaining.
Which, is what you get with the book. The thing is durned funny and the footnotes, absent in the webcomic are a hoot with many a LOL moment. Being aware of some steampunk conventions/tropes helps, but really, the authors do an excellent job of creating their milieu and sticking with it. There is also an intimacy that come with the text version that is missing from the webcomic; in the webcomic you get Phil and Kaja's vision of Agatha and her world. In the text version, your mind fills in the interstices - but that has always been the prime allure of the printed page.
I'm not going to try to synopsize the book, it is too convoluted and rich to easily do so. Suffice it to say that the read is a rollercoaster that will keep you interested if not riveted, as cliché as that may seem. Enjoyable, yes; re-readable, you betcha; stands alone without volumes 1 and 2, well, not so much as there are allusions back to volumes 1 and 2. So, get all three already.
Yeah, definitely get all three. The other two are available on Amazon.
You will recognize the dialog and get a different feeling for the interactions based on the prose as opposed to the visuals.
The book presents in novel form a story from the web comic. Katja Foglio is a gifted and imaginative writer who draws us into a world of adventure, romance and MAD SCIENCE.
And as with the classic "Perils of Pauline", this one leaves the reader thirsting for the next volume!
If you haven't read the webcomic, they are further along in the storyline than the novels, so I encourage everyone to go check it out!
