Decent book overall, but too focused on genealogy. The first half of the book is so insanely boring I had to force myself to read it all. In truth I began speed-reading and skipping over the countless lists and name/date information. Near the end though, it was interesting, but short and lacking in fully developed stories.

The book is loaded with great info about the Picts. My mother is descended from them and I am thirsty for information about them. I was intellectually satisfied after reading the scholarly book. It also has a good lineage of the ancient Pickish and Scottish kings.

I thought that this book was excellent. The layout was good, the logical progression between chapters well thought out and the speculations valid without being over-committed. I particularly appreciated the thorough examination of the Pictish king list in the appendices. Overall, a stirring evaluation of the importance of the contribution of the Picts to Scotland's history, bringing sometimes characters with the scantiest trace in documented history to life as individuals of skilful diplomacy or tactical nous. Highly recommended.
