Dr. Milstein’s excellent work is a welcome exception. What sets it apart is that it is strongly rooted in up-to-date, mainstream medical science. I believe this volume could serve as a graduate level textbook on the neuroscience of cognitive processes in the human brain. I feel confident that the science is accurate. The text is extensively referenced, from an extraordinarily wide array of the scientific literature. (In fact, there are 50 pages of references, but they must be accessed on Dr. Milstein’s website, at least in my Kindle edition. I must admit this was probably not a wise decision on the part of the publisher.) The book avoids dogma; it doesn’t shy away from admitting the occasional uncertainties which exist at the cutting edge of this rapidly evolving field. Yet, at the same time that there is academic rigor, the information is presented in a clear, easily understood manner. Explanations of the science helped clarify for me subjects I thought I understood. I was also introduced to much information about which I was ignorant.
The book delivers admirably on the author’s promise to provide the reader with “simple, scientifically valid, concrete and actionable steps that can significantly protect… [the] brain.” Some of the benefit of the Dr. Milstein’s program will not be apparent immediately. After all, the aging process takes years. However I was pleasantly surprised to find that much of what he suggests does, in fact, provide rapidly noticeable positive effects. Examples include techniques to reduce stress, improve sleep, and exercise in a manner that is enjoyable, rather than painful.
Is there anything with which I disagree? The only subject I feel I have even limited competence to critique is the dietary advice. Here, there are one or two statements with which I might quibble. But I must acknowledge that Dr. Milstein has such an encyclopedic knowledge of the scientific literature that I would be very hesitant to debate with him.
A few words on style. Dr. Milstein writes in a casual, conversational manner. He doesn’t talk down to the reader, but at the same time even complex topics are explained clearly, and skillfully. He also has a wonderfully engaging, dry sense of humor. The book is a pleasure to read.
The Age-Proof Brain deserves wide readership. In addition to giving useful advice on maintaining one’s health, it is also an admirable example of what books of popular science can be.
One thing I noticed is that many words are accompanied by a small number which I thought would indicate an end note that would give more info. I didn't find any anywhere in the book.
