About the Author
My name is Jessica Page, I' m a new author that may or may not have a minor addiction to reading novels (both YA and adult fiction), watching movies and television series, especially ones that have vampires, werewolves, and/or steamy romance is in the storyline. I live in Northern Ontario Canada with my husband and pets where I spend my days working in a 'pencil-pushing paradise' but I find myself writing Adult and YA fiction whenever I have a free second which never quite feels like long enough... but given the fact that my retirement will not happen for a very long time so I'll take what I can get in the meantime. I've always been an imaginative person (and admittedly probably a little neurotic) with a passion for good stories and characters and I'm thrilled (and anxious) to finally be sharing my writing beyond my computer's hard drive. The Agency (The Agency Hunger Series)
By Jessica Page
Published July 14, 2014
**** (4.5 Stars)
HARPER ANDREWS, is a mind reader who has no idea how or why she is the way she is. After being saved by Agent Reid Doyle from a vampire attack she is introduced to a secret world guarded and protected by the Supernatural Enforcement and Control Agency (SECA). A world where vampires, werewolves and mages are normal and humans are at the bottom of the food chain. Things are not perfect but she finds herself thriving and feeling at home for the first time in her life.
AGENT REID DOYLE, is a vampire who likes his solitude so the last thing he wanted when he saved Harper was to have to spend more time with her. The fact that he’s attracted to her is inconvenient and he resents having to be responsible for someone else. Losing another loved one is out of the question and he intends to avoid it at all cost.
Both Harper and Reid can’t seem to turn off their attraction for one another and love, sex and blood has a way of complicating things quickly in their world. They need to stay focused and find out who’s responsible for the vampire caused human murders with additional internal and external threats working against them. Choices will be made to protect the things and people they love, choices that will change everything, including each other.
Harper is a very strong woman with many amazing abilities that she has no idea about. She was simply walking along, minding her own business, when she is attacked by a vampire. Completely stunned by the events, she is lucky that Agent Reid Doyle stepped in to save her. After a short, but intense, round of questioning about what happened, Harper returns home with the hopes that she will never see Reid again. Harper has always managed to support herself, and is brave in the face of danger. She is a quick learner, and will stop at nothing to uncover the truth around her.
Reid is a vampire working for the Agency to help ferret out the supernatural creatures who don’t abide by the laws. The ones who plot against others, and who show themselves to the world, exposing who they are. Against his wishes, he is assigned to investigate Harper, and to introduce her to this new world. As he tries to fight his attraction towards her, it doesn’t help that he is partnered up with her at the agency.
The two find themselves in a love-hate relationship. One where they are able to easily annoy the other, while simultaneously wanting to rip their clothes off. As Reid helps Harper learn to master her new powers, and train her to be able to fight, they both grudgingly come to respect and care for one another. Though they start to form a bond, there are many out there who do not want to see them succeed in their mission to protect other supernaturals and keep them hidden from the humans. They find themselves fighting for their lives in order to survive a nefarious plot by those in the community. Only time will tell if they are able to succeed, and who will make it out alive.
There were a lot of things I really loved about this book. Mostly the characters and the way they were written. The dialogue was engaging, and there was certainly angst as the two navigated their roles in the new working relationship they had. I was eager to see them get together, and to see if they would be able to handle being with one another while also working together. There was a lot of action, so it kept the story going at a fast pace. I didn’t feel like there were any slow parts to the book, which is a big plus, especially in a debut novel. I thought the author did an extremely good job of making likable secondary characters, and an interesting back story. I found it intriguing that the author put in a guide to the various supernaturals that exist in this world. I liked that it wasn’t the same as every other paranormal book out there, which showed great creativity on her part. There was certainly enough plot going on to set up for a series of books, and I am eager to see where the story goes.
There were a few things that kept me from giving this a five-star rating. The biggest issue being the editing. There were a lot of grammar mistakes in the book. Most were in the form of improper use of semi-colons. There were some spelling mistakes and some words mixed up here or there. I think it might benefit the author to have another go around with the editing process.
~Overall, I found the book to be really enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, and I believe this is an author with a great imagination and who could go far with her work. If you haven’t had a chance to read this book, it should be added to your TBR.
My Rating: 5 stars
Harper has lived her entire life being told that she was different and treated like she was a curse. She was always kept at arm’s length and never felt that she belonged anywhere. At a time when her life has finally started going her way, she is thrown into a huge whirlwind that brings with it utter chaos in many forms. In the center of this new life is one person who throws her more off balance than anything else. His name is Reid, and he will do anything and everything possible to keep her from getting close. He has lost those he dearly loved in the past, and he refuses to lose any more if he has anything to say about it. Unfortunately for both him and Harper, fate has other plans that will not only reawaken and heal these two broken souls, but will forever transform the very core of their world. They must work together in order to discover and stop the evil that is slowly destroying all that they hold dear.
I have been looking forward to reading this story because it sounded refreshingly original and extraordinarily fascinating. Being someone who has always been interested in legends and myths, I knew that I would enjoy it immensely, and I was so right. The characters were amazing, and I loved how exquisite they all were. Seeing a new twist on age-old folktales was so much fun. The beautiful love story that we are privileged to see left me in awe, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Jessica Page has definitely caught my attention, and I look forward to reading what she creates next! Her talent is a wonder to behold, and I was enthralled with all of her twists and turns along the way. As a person who treasures the written word, I can’t tell you the joy that I feel in my heart when I stumble across a writer whose fabulous work of art takes on such a magical and ethereal quality. Whatever you do, do not miss out on this treasure!
