Product Description
In a simultaneous global assault, LEGION has taken control of the nations of the world and the only force left to stop them is MAYHEM. Led by the mysterious and no-nonsense Persephone Brimstone, MAYHEM's elite Super Agents are called to the city of Seoul, South Korea. Led by LEGION Minister Doctor Babylon and his diabolical lieutenants, a nefarious plot is set in motion to build a world-altering device that will grant unrivaled power to the supervillain organization. In order to stop LEGION and take back the world, the Agents of Mayhem will traverse a sprawling urban battlefield from the ground to the rooftops and team up as a super-agent collective to stop LEGION at any cost. Success is far from guaranteed and collateral damage will be substantial, but it's all in a day's work for the Agents. The Agents of MAYHEM (Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds) fuse together technology, weaponry and gadgets to create an all-out arsenal of futuristic warfare-and have absolutely no qualms about putting it all to use against their enemies. Featuring an original storyline, trademark over-the-top open-world gameplay, and the look-and-feel of a distinctive superhero cosmos, Agents of Mayhem is a true Volition game. This new IP is a part of the Saints Row universe, sharing certain story elements, symbolism, and design inspiration with the multi-million selling franchise. Pros:
Characters are funny and you can customize them fairly well.
The story is good, not amazing, but it is making fun of the old Saturday morning cartoons like GI Joe, so the corniness is to be expected.
Combat is easy to learn and do.
Characters heal automatically when they are on stand by
Each character has their own unique weapons and ways they play
Vehicle control is easy and there are not many races.
Cons:
Missions (even story missions) are very repetitive.
The world map is fairly small in comparison to Steelport from Saints Row 3 and 4.
Missions repeat, even in story missions. Even though there are about 12 different missions, they happen all the time.
Lack of flying vehicles is annoying. There's usually always a way up to a roof, but in open world games, i enjoy that freedom.
Car "battles" are also annoying. There are missions where you have to destroy a target vehicle. While not hard, there are no vehicles with weapons. You pretty much just ram into the other car until it explodes.
On to the review for this game though. I've been playing it since launch, maybe an hour or two a day. I've only gotten past the 2nd chapter of the main story. I've been taking my time. So far the characters are fun and have good personalities. Their back stories are, okay, you get a general back story at the beginning then as you progress more of their stories are unlocked. Not overly important to me, as their personalities make up for it. They all have their own gear and play styles. You start out with a single attribute for each character (shield breaker, armor breaker, hacker, etc) then as you level up to 10, they gain a second one. I do wish there were more attributes, i pretty much named off most of them, there's 6 total. They do all get 9 pieces of gear, separated into three groups, where you can equip one at a time for a total of three. You can augment them later in the game as you unlock more "Legion" items, but starting out you only have 1 and then you unlock more as you level up and complete missions. At the point in the game i am now, there are 10 playable characters. Each character is different in terms of how they play, as mentioned above, their uses are similar.
Combat is easy. Pretty much point and shoot. Each character has a shield and health bar. If a character is downed, you can revive them with the Mayhem symbol if an enemy drops it. Shield (even on hearty characters) drop a little too quickly at times, but those characters with weaker health and shields tend to have a faster reboot time. Your characters also heal automatically if they are swapped out, and there are health pick ups.
The game world is surprisingly small. I kept thinking more of it would appear but it never did. It might not necessarily be a bad thing for this game, but when you're used to open worlds like Just Cause, Assassins Creed, and GTA V, it's kind of odd to have such a small world. You can get from one end to the other in about 5 minutes (give or take). One of my biggest complaints about the game is the missions. There are about 12 different mission styles. Rescue a hostage, steal a vehicle, destroy a vehicle, take over an outpost, etc. May sound like a lot, but when your doing these things in story missions and throughout the game, it gets very repetitive. In fact I've taken over the same lair 3 times and i haven't even started the 3rd story mission yet. This could change later in the game, but i'm guessing not.
The other thing i don't like is the vehicle combat. I will say, vehicle control is easy and they keep the amount of races down (always bothered me that you had to race in the Saints Row games, and games like Crackdown and GTA. If i wanted to race i would buy Forza...) Vehicle combat consist of ramming the other car until it explodes. There are no combat vehicles and you can't shoot out of the car. There are also no aerial vehicles. The city isn't really big enough to justify it, but still, would be nice to use.
The story is good, it's not amazing, and there are better stories out there. However, they are really making fun of old Saturday morning cartoons, so the story telling style is appropriate and they really go all out on that. I find my self laughing a good bit, so that's always a good thing.
Overall it's a fun game and i'm glad i got it. The overview is below.
Pros:
Characters are funny and you can customize them fairly well.
The story is good, not amazing, but it is making fun of the old Saturday morning cartoons like GI Joe, so the corniness is to be expected.
Combat is easy to learn and do.

Car "battles" are also annoying. There are missions where you have to destroy a target vehicle. While not hard, there are no vehicles with weapons. You pretty much just ram into the other car until it explodes.
Pros: - Characters are what you'd expect from Deep Silver. Morning Cartoon characters with a foul mouth. The character missions do a great job developing the backstory of who they are. The character banter while moving around the world was enjoyable and wanted more of that.
- Story is a 80's-90's morning cartoon with a lot of the gags that you'd expect see from GI Joe. It's not master class story telling but let's be honest if that's what you were expecting go play Horizon/Witcher/Fallout/Etc. Its good enough for what this game is trying to be.
- They did a good job giving specific play styles to each character, I thought that controlling the characters was fluid and I could find a team that would match my playstyle.
Cons: - Not a lot of diversity in the mission types.
- The Lairs/Construction Sites and Buildings are all really similar. The city although colorful was pretty lifeless.
- They built the city vertically to try to increase the size of the map; it didn't work for me.
- Gameplay Loop was repetitive. Its a pro and a con for me... its a beat 'em up so it's expected to a point but because the environments and missions didn't change there were times it got stale.
- The social/political/pop culture satire seem muted vs what I expected it to be
- Having to go to the ARK (hub world) to change the squad is obnoxious
