As a daughter who is dealing with aging parents there were times I wanted to tell Agnes give Bettie Jo a break she’s doing the best she can. Anytime I want to talk to the characters makes it a more enjoyable story. The cast of characters are quirky yet believable and the setting has a you-are-there feeling. A delightful read.
I'm just a few years younger than Agnes.
I was happy everyone worked together to make th residents lives better
Always, remember that when our, our legs and our minds fail us, we are still human and need to be treated with respect.
This book is heartwarming and funny with a bunch of quirky characters who will work their way into your heart. You get drawn into the story right away because Agnes’s personality just leaps off of the page, and you know you want to know her. She’s got a pet pig, for goodness sakes! She’s not too happy about moving to Sweetbriar Manor, but it’s a good thing she does. She uncovers some unscrupulous activity and gets right down to taking care of it.
I really love the characters in this book! The story moves quickly and the dialog will keep you entertained. Cozy mystery books are some of my favorites. This is one that is done very well. I’m hoping the author writes more in the series, but I haven’t seen anything about coming books. Even if this is the only one, you’re not left hanging, so it can be read as a stand-alone.
The action depended on the premise that residents of the home were virtual prisoners. I know of plenty of horrendous situations, but the annoyances in this home, albeit irritating for the residents, were not enough to set aside what I do know about good and bad seniors' homes. So I never was able to suspend belief and just dive into the story whole heartedly.
That said, Agnes Hopper is a character worthy of a better book, and I think Heilman is up to writing it.
