"The exhibition catalogue Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist offers an in-depth look at an artist whose work does not easily resolve into familiar categories of abstract art because of its deeply spiritual purpose. This book brings together a range of scholarly perspectives on aspects of Agnes Pelton’s (1881–1961) abstractions, delving into her biography, and carving out a place for her in the history of American modernism without downplaying her engagement with esoteric religions and devotional painting practices."

The articles outlining Pelton's life, milieu, ideas and painting technique are also excellent. Pelton's slow approach to painting, with use of stippling and many coats of glazing, is well captured in the illustrations. She stands at the opposite end of abstract impressionists' athletic immediacy of expression, and it is wonderful to read of a life devoid of macho posturing, ego inflation or drunken excess. Her paintings start from humility, then expand to the vastness of desert horizons and beyond. I am very grateful to the editors, curators and writers who have given Agnes Pelton the profile she deserves.
