In clear, easy to read but erudite prose, Fowler travels the world to reveal the stark and horrifying situation regarding the current state of play with this virus. He believes we have a window to rescue the situation but unless we act now an absolutely catastrophic situation is brewing, in particular in Africa and Russia, but also in many other places including for instance the USA and large parts of South East Asia. He clearly and adamantly sets out that the solution is now ‘Don’t Die of Predudice’. He believes, and starkly demonstrates, that conservative attitudes to sex workers, drug users, LGBT people and medieval attitudes towards women are key. Unsparing in his criticisms, but delivering it in calm factual way, he demolishes by demonstration the religious bigotry and the wishful thinking of both left and right towards most of these issues. Marshalling figures to prove his point he has travelled all over the globe to talk face to face to both sides of the argument. From the positions of Anglican and Catholic Churches on sex outside marriage and gay people to Harriet Harman’s proposal to outlaw buying sex, he takes apart the cases, looks at them for and against and says in effect ‘look at the facts not your belief that something may work’. He also outlines truly frightening and disgusting, utterly barbaric behaviour in Africa and Russia by corrupt systems. Drug users in Russia taken from the streets by police, chained to beds in ‘rehabilitation’ units and beaten to make them say they will stop. The police in most of Africa, in Russia and in India, racketeering asisting murders, and calls to murder from politicians that are so horrifyingly wide spread they are Nazi-like. Truly terrifying government led oppression motivated by money and inhuman ignorance.
Not since Richard Davenport-Hines’ ‘Sex, Death and Punishment’ has there been such a sane, civilised and erudite writer in this field. Don’t die of prejudice – it is not over or manageable. If the medieval behaviour that fill our news makes you despair read this good man’s account of his own mission to try to suggest solutions.
thoroughly recommend .
I am grateful to Mr Fowler for the tenacity and determination with which he tackled the HIV Aids issue when in government
