Now to the review... Styx, dear god in heaven I am in love! My favorite part about Styx is the fact that he has a hard time speaking. I do not know why, but it makes him more endearing to me. Not just some hard nose biker dude, but a soft and cuddly bear. Yea I know, I have issues but just think about it. You want to snuggle him and tell him everything is okay. You also want to hear him cuss, drink, and beat the crap out of everyone that has ever done horrible things to you in your life. I know you are as messed up as me in the head, I won't hold it against you I promise.
Then there is Mae, she is also not perfect. I love that she has the background she does. She can accept Styx for who he was and who he is. She can become a person within herself and the world of the Hangman. Mae is probably one the very few female characters I can picture myself as in this type a genre. Not the crazy bible thumping cult, but the shell shock that it is being brought into this world. All Mae knows is that she unconditionally loves Styx. That she will do anything to be with him, to protect him, and to make him happy. The rest is all just superficial. That is the type of love we are all looking for. That is the way we all want a man to make us feel. Now him being unbelievably gorgeous and wanting to have us 6 ways from Sunday wont hurt either. Love and respect between the two of them is amazing. That is what draws me into this book, the amazing sex and hotness of it all is just added bonus!
One thing Cole did that I love is tie up loose ends! Man I do not hate a book more than when I am left with questions. I could stop right now and be fine with the way things have been wrapped up. I sure as hell am not going to but I could if this series turned out to be my cup of tea. I can not tell you how many times I have continued reading a series I hated just because I had to many questions left unanswered to be able to leave it alone. Only to finish and still have a million questions! Cole gives us, as readers, the options to find out what happens between Mae's two sisters and their Hangman or to just be happy with the ending Styx and Mae were given.
More books need characters like Styx and Mae. Minus the explicit nature of the story, the characters are real. Their love is real. Their situation is real. More authors need to write characters like Cole. I honestly hope that people are able to see past all of this and see the wonderful job Cole did shaping her characters and creating a story that us, as reader, are able to place ourselves into. A story that all of us can wish to be a part of, or more importantly a love that all of us have dreamed of having all of our lives.
I hope the ‘filler’ in this book will eventual pertain to the rest of the series, only I fear I may never read it since this was one of the more difficult reads I have finished in sometime.
First, the basics, I didn’t like that the opening by the Author doesn’t accurately fit the book, perhaps it fits the series as a whole though. Also, there is far too much blood and murder and foul words that seem to be more filler than words adding to the story.
Second, I hate when Styx signed that his “words” were not in quotes. I often thought of it as an internal thought. Towards the end I did find an end quote around his signed words as if at one point this dialogue was quoted.
Third, my belief in the characters was not suspended. Often, I wanted to stop reading as I did not believe what I was reading matched the characters. Mae’s character did not act at all appropriate for her circumstances. Also, the ending was predictable based on the fact that the characters did not do as they should have early on. I don’t want to say what, so it doesn’t spoil the book, but I felt the author tried to keep reader guessing but instead gave it all away.
Maybe after a Hangman break I will be able to read book two, but for now, even though I am curious, it’s not on my TBR list.
Mae escaped a predestined life in a cult that would cause her nothing but pain and is saved and protected by a man from the outside world who she is drawn to in a way that she doesn't easily understand.
There is a talent in writing from a true biker perspective that makes these characters believable and this author nails it. Surrounded by the intensity of club life, there is a beautiful love story that's raw, off the charts sexy with a hero that doesn't apologize for his actions and a heroine that will do anything to stay with the man who has stolen her heart. Tillie Cole holds nothing back with the reality of how these men live whether it's drinking, sex, the way they make their living or how they will take out anyone who are a threat to their women, brothers or the club. The secondary characters are as well defined as the central ones and I hope they will get their own story as well. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves sexy bad-boy alpha-bikers as much as I do. I can't wait for more from this author.
I've had no sleep and just want to read. I'm invested, I'm addicted, I loved this book. The world that Tillie Cole had created is dark and twisted and real. I absolutely believe every word because I know it's out there. I've seen it. But Mae and Styx (I love it when she calls him River) offer a beautifully angst ridden love story that I literally could not put down. I'm not sure what else to say as these books have been out for a while and there is plenty of info on the stories. All I can say is that if you love anything about MC books, dark romance, or super angsty romance....this is a must read series! Going back in for book 2 right away!
