This is a set of 11 songs related by the theme of chicken. Beginning with an old-time country song, "Cluck Old Hen," we then slip into swing jazz for "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens." "Bake that Chicken Pie" is an old-time country song adapted to a medium-tempo country song.
"Duck's Yas Yas" is a humorous old blues song of distant origin, first recorded in the late 1920s. "Banty Rooster Blues" is my adaptation, with percussion, of a Charley Patton song from the l920s. "Chicken Blues" originated with Billy Ward and the Dominoes in 1951.
"C-H-I-C-K-E-N" is a funny little country song originating in the American South. "Tired Chicken Blues" and "Rooster's Crowing Blues" are both adapted from the early, warm blues sound of Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, a Memphis jug band from the 1920s and 30s.
"Chicken Ain't Nothing But a Bird" is an early blues/jazz tune, possibly written and certainly performed and recorded by Cab Calloway. "Chicken Shack," a blues rock song, is adapted from the work of Champion Jack Dupree.
Dean Rathje: voices, electric and acoustic guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, piano, bass.
