The reason I bought it was because after reading the specs it did everything I needed and for the price I didn't worry about breaking it during a very rough shoot (I wasn't going to risk a $12,000 Sony for this production). It's held up extremely well, is very user friendly, has enough user control input to make it flexible and it gives very stable, clear images.
My suggestion is, should you get one, get a couple of extra batteries, charge them in the camera and toss them in the bag. Battery life is good but it's not great so a couple of extra batteries is worth the small cost.
The controls are easy to use and adapt to. You can easily shoot HD pictures or HD movies. HD 1080P is at 30 frames/sec, but a higher 60 frames/sec and 720P is also available. 8 Mega-pixel camera shots a great picture. I bought the 32 GB SD card at the same time, and can shoot maybe 10 thousand HD pictures. It packs well with a small soft-sided case and has survived many trips in my laptop bag and holds a charge well. Charges off my laptop usb, or the carchager, or the wall oulet charger, so lots of options. The quality of the video either night or day time shooting is very good. For the price I am very pleased with the unit and would recommend it to anyone.
Also mounted one on a motorcycle with the adjustable clamp for about $25 . I will post a review on that item so you can find it. Good luck . Bought them NEW from T.R.G. and Fulfilled by Amazon. All as promised. Hint Do not buy used I tried that with mixed results.
However, I find that I've barely used it since the required light levels are so high that you tend to be outside, where the 3x zoom is not sufficient.
Recently bought a stills camera with built in video function, and have used that more. It has better zoom, and better low light capability.
So this is disappointing; it will probably be good because it's solid state, and can record very low res (like web cam) for very long time, but not what I wanted it to do.
I'm very pleased with its ability to record at 20-30 feet; it is fairly good at capturing facial expressions. It's very easy to plug directly into my HDTV to review the videos. Other reviewers have complained about the software, but that is a non-issue if you're not looking to transfer the video onto your computer. I just keep the videos stored on a 16GB SD card. Didn't have any problems with color even in low indoor light. The autofocus is definitely an issue, but the manufacturers include a tripod, which was a pleasant surprise. It rarely autofocuses if you use the tripod and place it an appropriate distance away (for me it worked at 20-30 feet).
My biggest gripe is with the audio. The microphone is absolutely terrible. Barely picks up audio at 20-30 feet, and weirdly does not pick up audio very well 5 feet away either. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, the remote does not work at all. Would have been nice if it had worked, but not really a big deal to me. I paid $78 with free shipping, and overall I think it's definitely worth the cost.
Let me preface by saying I am a professional photographer so I may be a little too picky, but I am not satisfied with indoor recording at all. We are going to have another baby and I am searching for another camera because this won't cut it for recording the baby's birth. The indoor recording is VERY noisy. I've read that pretty much all flip cameras have this problem though so I guess a potential buyer should just know to expect noisy indoor pics.
