This drone packs a LOT of fun into a small package. There are some major drawbacks but despite them all, I keep thinking how much fun this is.
I’m going to start with the negatives:
The chief drawback of this drone is the small, non-replaceable battery. Because the rechargeable battery is built in, you cannot have a stash of fully charged batteries to enable you to use the drone for extended periods of time. Instead, expect about 5 minutes of fly time before the drone basically disconnects and falls to the ground. You really don’t get any warning: it just plummets out of the air and disconnects and then when you reconnect you get the flashing battery indicator. Also, the battery on this drone dies even when it is turned off and sitting on the shelf: you have to leave it plugged in 24x7 if you want a full charge when you go to use it. And it eschews a standardized charging cord for a custom round fitting: if you lose the cord, you’ll never be able to use your drone again.
And then there are the disconnects. It seems to disconnect from my cell phone about every 2 minutes or so. I wasn’t flying far away, maybe 20 feet away. Suddenly the video feed would break up and freeze and the screen on my phone would change to the dreaded “press the green checkmark to reconnect”. Even though the drone disconnects from my cell phone, I was still able to control the drone with the joystick to perform a safe landing.
Despite all of this, I found the fun amazingly fun. I’ve tried non-viewing drones in the past and found that my brain is not able to do the complex transforms to steer them backwards while they’re coming towards me. But this Air Hog has a live video feed right to my iPhone and includes a virtual reality “hat” that basically straps my iPhone to my face. Suddenly I see what the drone sees and steering is a piece of cake. I was able to avoid obstacles like trees and avoid getting the drone stuck on my roof. That is a major accomplishment.
The camera is really bad. I’m sure they call it 1080p but I think I could draw a clearer 1080p view with a crayon. Still, it’s perfectly adequate and it’s hard to explain the joy I felt as I looked down from 60 feet in the air.
So far it’s proven quite robust. Even big falls haven’t bothered it. It does land upside down quite often so I wish there was a “flip” feature. One time it landed in my neighbor’s yard (upside down) and I had to go over the fence to get it. It would have been neat if it had a way to quickly flip while on the ground so I could have gotten it upright and taken off again. This has happened multiple times and I keep wishing there was a way to quickly recover without having to manually retrieve the drone. I can imagine this being even more valuable if you accidentally landed on your roof or somewhere that you couldn’t reach.
In summary, this drone works just well enough to make me wish I had a more expensive one with a better camera, stable connectivity, and a long-lasting, replaceable battery. I’m sure that would set me back hundreds of dollars extra, but I can’t help but think it would be worth it.
