Top customer reviews
UPDATE: Originally rated at 4 stars. After 30 days of very limited use (maybe 15 flights), I reduce this item to 1 star because either the X-Wing's battery capacity is very diminished, or one or more of the rotors is not rotating up to speed. Essentially, the X-Wing will work on a full charge for about 30 seconds correctly, then it has trouble getting aloft and most of the time thereafter it speeds along the floor until it flips over. Sad. Fun while it lasted. Of course I'm past the return date on this item. At least it will look pretty on a shelf as a perpetual reminder of my failure to heed other reviewers warnings. So needless to say: Even if you get one that works...it will break the day after your last day to return it.
The trouble started after we opened it and charged it.
I spent the entire maiden voyage trying to calibrate the X-Wing so it would just hover. When I finally got it where I could keep it hovering, the battery died (8 minutes after I fired it up for the first time). After it charged, I let my son take a turn, since it was presumably calibrated. As soon as the drone took off, it veered backwards and to the right, hard. Again, I tried to recalibrate it, which turned out to be just as tedious as the maiden calibration exercise, and just as much of a failure. It should not be that difficult. My older son got a larger drone for Christmas, and it calibrated in moments and flies like a dream. Not once, in the first day of flying, was I able to even conceive of trying to shoot at the Death Star, since all I could do was try to maneuver it enough to keep it flying. That day, incidentally, was the last day it ever flew.
The next day, I let a friend of mine try out the X-Wing to see if he could fare any better. Unfortunately, the drone wouldn't even clear 12 inches off the floor, and it hasn't since. It just flies up 6 to 12 inches, and veers off into a cabinet or chair.
For $80, this miniature drone should calibrate easily, hover without doubt, and be able to shoot at the Death Star as it is purported to do. It does none of these things.
The controls are similar to those used on larger drones
