A very capable wireless adapter, given the right driver

The AirLink101 adapter is probably the smallest wireless-N capable USB adapter you will find. It's small size is ideal for laptop and desktop computers alike, as it doesn't stick out and risk being broken.

First off, the driver that comes with the USB adapter SUCKS. The two adapters I purchased were both used on Windows 7 x64 desktops. While Windows 7 easily detected the device and installed drivers for it, the stock drivers made for a very difficult time getting a reliable connection to the network. The drivers found on the included CD were no better.

Turns out you need to download the RealTek drivers for the 802.11b/g/n Single Chip RTL8188CUS chipset from RealTek's website, as this AirLink adapter uses the RealTek chipset. Once I installed that driver on both desktop computers, my signal strength was much higher and did not drop a connection. Surfing the net was every bit as fast as my wireless-G connections (as expected), and intranet transfers were very quick.

I imagine that many reviewers who gave bad reviews for this adapter did not attempt to update the drivers for it. To really give this adapter a fair shake, do yourself a favor and use the RealTek drivers to avoid headaches or unneeded returns. I'm using this adapter with an Asus RT-N16 router--one computer is about 40 feet away (through two rooms), and the other computer is 2 floors upstairs on the other side of the house, neither are showing signal issues.

So far this is 5-star wireless-N adapter... my only knock is that I just wish the included drivers were a little better for easier setup.

Works Great with Windows 7 - Amazing Little Device!

Thanks to the tip by J. Martin I never even opened the driver CD that came with this adapter. To be totally honest I didn't really expect much from this little adapter (after all...how big could the antenna be?) But... low and behold I get a solid signal in every room of my 2500sq ft house... including in the upstairs bedroom at the opposite end of my house and the furthest distance from my wireless Belkin Pre-N router (with "multiple" walls in between!) Granted, I have no idea how the included driver CD might have worked... but after reading so many bad reviews about poor signal strength... then reading J Martins review... I didn't think twice about following the advice. It sure worked for me! For those of you complaining about poor signal strength etc... try the Realtek driver! Thanks J Martin.

1) Navigate to the Realtek website.
2) Click on the Downloads tab
3) In the Search Bar type: RTL8188CUS
4) In the next window that appears, click on: >> RTL8188CUS (Software)... (this takes you to the - Software: Drivers & Utilities section.)
5) Scroll down until you locate the heading: RTL8188CUS
6) Under RTL8188CUS, located the description field that says: Utility and Driver Auto Installation Program (Support XP/Vista/Win7)(Install Shield v1.00.0182) (you don't want OmniPeek)
7) Click on one of the download sites of your choice... and save the download (zip file) to your computer.

NOTE: The Realtek download includes a setup utility that includes a bunch of other stuff not really needed (all you really need is the driver. Just unzip the file you just downloaded
and locate the folder titled 88_92_CU_Driver. Open the folder and find the driver for your specific operating system and save the folder to a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD and
your ready to install your adapter.

FYI: When I inserted the adapter in my Win 7 laptop, Win 7 "attempted" to install default drivers but it failed saying it could not find the appropriate drivers for the device. At this point I simply "browsed" over to the folder I saved to my USB drive and it installed the downloaded driver. Piece of cake. BTW: On the Airlink101 AWLL5088 package, it clearly states supports PC/MAC WINDOWS 7/Vista/XP.

Worked on Linux (kernel 3.3.7/Fedora 17)

I bought this dongle (AirLink 101 AWLL5088) to use with a PC running Linux (Fedora 17). The device *is* Linux compatible, but it doesn't have any Linux drivers on the CD-ROM that it ships with. When I first plugged it in, Linux recognized it as a USB device, but not as a Wifi adapter. Running lsusb showed:

Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN

So this dongle uses the Realtek 8188CUS chipset.

I tried the rtl8192cu kernel module that is available after installing kmod-staging. That recognized the device and allowed me to connect, but it constantly dropped connections using WPA Personal, going through a cycle of connection/disconnection/reconnection/disconnection. So I blacklisted the rtl8192 kernel module and looked for another option.

I went to Realtek's site to see if I could get the most recent Linux drivers for this chipset. I found the 8188CUS driver for Linux (version 3.4.2_3727) in the downloads section of the Realtek website, downloaded it, and ran the installation script. That created and installed the 8192cu kernel module (which is *not* the same as the rtl8192cu kernel module). After that, the device worked perfectly.

So if you're interested in a Wifi dongle for Linux, this one is definitely worth considering. I suggest getting the driver directly from Realtek. Note that their installation script compiles the kernel module for your system, so you'll need to have development-tools and kernel-headers installed.
