About the Author

Sal J. Fallucco's career spanned more than 40 years in aviation, 33 of which were spent flying as a commercial airline pilot following a 5 year tour as a Naval Transport pilot. Type rated on: C-130, C-118, B707, B720, B727, L1011, SA 227, B747, B757, B767, he held a Flight Instructors certificate for both airplane and instrument. His commercial airline experience included 23 years as a management pilot serving as Instructor Pilot, Check Airman, Flight Manager, Manager of Pilots, Director of Pilot Development, Staff Vice President of Safety & Engineering, and Staff Vice President of Training for TWA, and most recently as an Aviation Consultant.

I purchased this book in 2004. I'm a few months from retirement and the most important chapter for me was Chapter 2. "Reflecting on Your Career." "Think about the kind of career you intend to have." Well that concept was indelibly etched into my brain the moment I read it. And every single trip that thought was always there. There are many chapters that have equal and strong significance. The book was written in 2002 and many of the concepts in this book are employed today as SOPs. Much of the book seems common sense but are pilots infallible? I would like to thank Sal Fallucco for his positive influence and ethics on my career.

This feels like a young adult, story driven approach to how a PIC should think and behave. While not necessarily the wrong style, I didn't feel like much was conveyed in terms of techniques and value-wise there wasn't much to take away.

If you're contemplating or about to undergo a command course and need a feel-good story to give you a morale shot in the arm then by all means this book fits the bill.

I am a senior flight student at a university and had to purchase this book for a class. Though I do not work in an airline, I found the book gave very practical, useful advice throughout. The book gave clear discussion of a number of pertinent topics including judgment skills, pilot responsibilities, CRM, communication, and human error. Many chapters include interesting accounts of real incidents or accidents that tie in well to the topic. Each chapter ends with a short scenario that ties in with the chapter topic and a short discussion of some options that I found really made me think about the topic.

Overall, I really liked the book and found it to be an easy read. I recommend it to aspiring captains and even those who just want to know more about a multi-crew cockpit.

To start with there aren't many book specifically catered for command preparation. It can be said that the book covers a fairly wide and comprehensicve range of relevant topics but it will be more ideal if the topics are explored further and deeper. Good for introductory and hopefully inspiring other books of similiar topics to follow.
