AirCraft: The Jet as Art Hardcover – May 1, 2007

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Often it takes an artist to show us that the familiar is in fact truly remarkable. Jeffrey Milstein’s elegant photographs of commercial airliners have quickly become contemporary icons, published in 2005 in photomagazin, Graphis Photo Annual, and American Photography 21, and winning first place in the PDN Digital Photography Contest. Milstein’s meticulously composed large-format photos of airliners in flight reveal the beauty and power of these sleek, complex machines and restores some of the glamour to the experience of air travel.

An eloquent foreword by Walter J. Boyne helps the reader appreciate these amazing technological wonders, and the book gives technical data on each airplane pictured. Not just for the aviation buffs but for anyone who appreciates the sublime beauty possible in even the most complex technology.

How refreshing to come across a technology art book. Artists, of course, have realized the beauty of the machine for decades, especially with the Modernist movement in Europe during the Twenties and Thirties. Charles Sheeler was perhaps the leading American photographer to appreciate the exciting visual form of technology. Now photographer (and designer because he did the book's layout) Jeffrey Milstein brings it bang up to date with these stunning photos of jet bottoms.I thinks it's worth saying that if you like the technical detail aspect of aircraft maybe this book isn't for you but if you want to see crisp, precise photos of contemporary jets from a very unusual angle you'll enjoy the forty-two shown in these pages. There are some profile shots and seven front-on ones but neither of these can capture the fascination of the undersides. The book is a treat to look through thanks to the square twelve inch by twelve format with the jets handsomely printed (in 250dpi) on good paper. There is a visual extravaganza of a double foldout (to forty-six inches across) of the 'Indian Princess' Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-600 so if you ever sat in the window seat on the right-hand side of this particular jet here's a rather unusual flight memento for you. My only criticism is that the list of aircraft on a spread in the back is alphabetical rather than page number sequence and some spreads, amazingly, have no numbers.A second volume Jeffrey?***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

A brilliant intersection of art and technology. Milstein photogtaphs the underbelly (literally) of our commercial aviation fleet, reveals its beauty, its power, and the unseen side of a lot of fancy jets. It provokes thought as to who we are as a society and sheds light on the craft of the designers whose names are never known.

You really have to be a plane person to fully appreciate this book. But even a casual observer will notice the quality that is put into the volume both in the photography and the book itself. It left me wishing there was more and I mean that in a positive sense.

I got really irritated reading all the negative reviews for this book because had these people done any research prior to buying, they would know that Jeffrey Milstein is an ARTIST not just some photographer with a airplane fetish. If you are obsessed with airplanes & are looking for a documentation of the artwork/graphic designs on aircrafts or mechanical aspects of these planes, then no, this is not the book for you. If you are the kind of person who does not understand how Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup can was art, then you should probably avoid buying art books all together. May the Lord help you!

The book, like the title points out, is a series of images illustrating the art in the body/shape/form of an aircraft. Most pics are beautifully shot silhouettes showing the underside of many planes, a view that one rarely sees or appreciates when boarding, flying in, or watching a plane. It is really a lovely series, especially if you like Jeffrey's work.

Wow. This is not what I expected. Got it cheap (used) and sure glad I didn't pay much as I would have been EXTREMELY disappointed. This is simply a bunch of pictures of the bottom of aircrafts. Looked through it once, and ready to send it on to Goodwill.

If you are interested in Airline Art, there are other MUCH better books. Not sure what the author was trying to do here, but it didn't work for me...

This is a beautiful homage for those who love airliners. The minimalist approach and detailed photography is breathtaking. The beauty of industrial design is perfectly depicted. This book is a must for both aviation enthusiasts to industrial designers.

Great photographer. Book does some, but not full, justice to his work. Would be better in a larger format, higher quality.

Condition of the book was not great.

The Smithsonian displayed enlarged art from this book, and I instantly knew I needed to buy it. The graphics are large and colorful, without overwhelming the viewer. I highly recommend this product, but not its purchase. Every copy I have received from Amazon is damaged in some respect. The first copy had a ripped dust jacket and bent hard cover. The second copy was structurally sound, but filthy on the back part of the dust jacket. If I knew the frustration in dealing with these damaged books, I never would have bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, does what it says on the cover.

This is an absolutely outstanding book for folk who like Aircraft, photography, engineering, anorak detail and high quality printing.

Every page is a stunner, the images are sharp, the aircraft are all photographed in an identical way and the images speak for themselves. These are views of commercial aircraft as they come in to land that have had the sky, or other distracting details, removed to allow the viewer to focus on the plane itself. The front cover is an excellent example of the images contained in the book.

There is very little written info, but then this is not a technical manual. Fact lovers need to look elsewhere.

A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant

As both an amateur photographer and an aviation enthusiast I found this book simply wonderful.

The clarity of image achieved by striping away the background allows you to look at the aircraft not only as technical objects but as works of art.

I thoroughly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars very dissapointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2011
This book fails on many levels for me. Maybe the 'art' is beyond my appreciation, but I found the pictures very boring, almost all the aircraft shots are as the front cover, that is, showing the underside of the aircraft fuesalage, its very difficult to see the airline livery on the pictures, and even for a very experienced long time civil aviation fan, its even difficult for me to identify the aircraft type, in many cases, for example, a 737 from the underbelly, one isnt sure if it would be a 737-700 or a 737-400 for example. There are no actual captions to accompany the prints, just a small note in very small faint print at the bottom.

I have torn the few prints I like from the book to display on walls of the office and they look quite impressive but this is the first ever book I have torn up, so that says a lot for how much I liked it. I expected some variety, not just all 'bottom' shots which become boring, one after another, and more shots side on wherre one could study the aircraft and also the airline colour schemes too, this would have added much interest. The book seems to focus on being 'arty' but thre is very little in the book to interest aviation fans in my opinion, with only scant text, only a few pages at the back detailing some aircraft types and their performances etc.
