Excellent reference for fans of the Grumman F4F Wildcat.

The fourth monograph in this excellent series covers most models of the famous Grumman Wildcat. Like the other volumes, this one is largely pictorial in nature but is extremely detail oriented and very informative. Both the Grumman F4F and Eastern FM series are amply covered in minute detail. If you are a modeler building a scale Wildcat you really owe it to yourself to get this book. I would have liked Dana to have included a little more on the prewar use of the airplane. Also be aware that if you are only looking for colors, markings and photos of operators other than the USN, this is not the book for you. Of the nearly 90 photos included, most are of details and only one is of a Royal Navy machine. The color photos are very well done and include interior views as well. There is also a nice table in the front that details the production and serials of the various types and another that lists US Navy Wildcat units that were carrier based.

This book is consistent with others in this series, in providing an outstanding selection of photographs, printed in large size and with outstanding quality, and described in extensive and accurate detail. Drawings and details from wartime manuals are also included where appropriate. There is also a short section with camouflage and markings particulars. Given Mr. Bell's past work it is no surprise this part is very useful indeed.

The book is not a detailed history of the Wildcat, nor a guide to its many variants, but fans of this machine will find it an indispensable supplement to the many works that cover those areas.

Great photo coverage of the primary USN/USMC fighter a/c of the 1941-43 time frame. While there are other softback books covering the type, this one offers really nice, clear medium and large format images along with technical data not available in most "garden-variety" titles. This is money well spent for your aviation book shelf in my very humble opinion.

Wonderful - Dana Bell is without peer, and this is among his best short works. The best short work on the Wildcat. Highly recommended.

If you are modeling the F4F and want to do some extra detailing, I consider this volume a must. It has great component views of the cockpit, wheel bays and engine.

I have enjoyed reading all that the other reviewers have pointed out about
what this excellent book is, and what it is not.

To their comments I will ad these:
In this book, Dana Bell has created a rich resource of thoroughly researched photos and has carefully explained details never before documented.
For example-some Wildcats had rudders with 11 stripes instead of the traditional 13. The author explains how that came about, and that it was not random or accidental. Model builders know their plastic kits have various details rendered as bumps, blobs, grooves and ridges. These photos take your eye in close, and map out what actual features these represent, and what purpose they served.

Dana Bell knows wartime production aircraft interior paint colors and chemistry like no one else. The book is filled with a running account of the color variations inside the aircraft shown.

No other book will guide you over, under, around, & through the Wildcats and Martlets of WWII like this one.
