Another workmanlike performance by Abbot.

I picked this one up primarily on the strength of Abbot's two volume history of the US Navy. It is an excellent review of the technology up to the early twenties. At that time it was not yet clear whether the airplane or the airship would the winner. Indeed it was uncertain that the would be a clear winner.

This is an old publication written about technology, inventors, application of inventions, perceptions, politics, strategy and economics, written as it was happening... late in WWI. It is well written and I find gives a different/more contemporary prospective view than some publications written long after. The ideas of how these developments were integrated into the war fighting and visioning what they could eventually morf into, I find most interesting, especially with the benefit of what has happened with these technologies and the world, since WWI.

Great perspective at the turn of the 20th Century and the first world war. It is amazing how inventive mankind can be to our own demise. Well written factual and informative. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.

I read this particular book believing it would be a history of the airplane and submarine developement. The further i read thr more mundane it became to me. It did not explain the grass roots of how either were developed. I like specific construction criteria from prototype to new modern examples. I found this to be lacking in specifics like that to really keep my interest.

A little dry for some. but a great historical look at Naval control over the submarine fleet. I liked it.

An old book, but well worth the time to see how technology even then was used to develop these weapons
