All of these stories are pretty short, which makes the book a very quick and easy read. When I started reading, I sort of assumed that all the stories would be the pilot-cheating-on-his-wife cliché. Boy, was I surprised!
Author Chris Manno put a lot of diversity into this book. Yeah, there were spouse-cheating stories, but there were also many others. For example, there was a story about a pilot flying his airliner into a city with a severe storm very close, and the hope was to get in and get out before conditions prevented flying. Then there was a story about an escort soldier accompanying the body of a fallen soldier.
In addition to the variety, Manno really demonstrated his talent for turning a phrase. For example, in describing a thought: “That thought, of course, sprouted green shoots of memory only recently planted.” A more structural example: “The drafty hallway smelled of floor wax and sweat.” It really gets the point across.
Something that was totally unexpected was poetic prose. A couple of the stories were written in poetic prose. Writing a story that’s readable is hard enough, but telling a story poetically is a real talent. I thought it was done very well. If you’re a fan of poetry, you’ll love it!
Despite this being fiction, I didn’t think the stories read like short stories. For example, there is no sense of pacing, nor are there climaxes. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like this.
If you’re up for a change from what you normally read, I suggest you give this a try. It’s a quick and easy read.
Not at all like his previous work AN AIRLINE PILOTS LIFE which I considered excellent.
