Airwheel made me a huge electric skateboard fan, but I will never buy a single product from them again because of their poor pricing and design choices.
Tips for people that didn't listen to me and bought this board anyways since it is impossible to find information on this product:
-Be careful letting other try. I spend nearly 5 minutes explaining to new riders to push the "go" slider as slow as possible. It is hard to know how much you need to lean into the acceleration... even after my rant most people gun it and immediately fall on their face. Luckily nobody has been seriously hurt yet.
-There is a mysterious switch in the battery compartment of the remote. This makes the top speed 28km/h instead of 20km/h. No mention of this anywhere. Doesn't seem to be damaging the board or motor any after 2 weeks.
-App does not work with Android 6.0(Latest at time of writing). I would not put much hope in that ever getting fixed. You need the app to check battery/change top speed.
The first issue is that it's really hard to start the board moving slowly. You push the trigger up the tiniest bit-- nothing happens. You push it again-- still nothing happens. There's some sort of dead zone. Push it the tiniest bit again and maybe the board will start moving slowly enough for you to keep your balance. But push it a little bit too far too quickly, it will throw you off like a bucking bronco. This is really annoying because if you're at a stop light or something, it's going to take you a few seconds to start moving after the light changes as you work your way through the dead zone. And if you try to speed through it you WILL wipe out. (As a side note, it's very wise to wear a helmet while riding this skateboard. VERY wise.)
The second big issue is that the brakes are either on or they are off. There is no in between, like on a bike or a car. Once you push that trigger down the brakes are on, and the board will suddenly stop, throwing you off like a mechanical bull in a honky tonk. The only way to slow down is to stop accelerating and wait for the friction between the wheels and the ground to slow you down. God save you if you're going downhill. The only use for the brakes is to apply them after you jump off the board so that it doesn't roll too far away from you.
Is this board worth buying? In my opinion, yes. But only because electric skateboards are a new product on the market, and this is currently one of the best ones you can get for the price. I sincerely hope Airwheel takes a look at this review and tries to fix these issues so they can release an improved Airwheel M3 2.0. I'd give it 5 stars.
