I think one of the best things about this product is the price, packaging and features. some of these features don't necessarily work 100% percent but it does what its supposed to do, and pretty well.
first let me go over why i bought this product: To watch movies
I have always dreamed about having a way to watch giant movies in a headset or goggle format. Personally, i have to wear glasses to see at a distance, but my glasses (despite what other reviews say) do not fit under this device. I have slight astigmatism in one eye, not bad enough for special contacts but fixable with contacts. with a good quality picture however it doesn't seem to make a difference. the most useful feature on this headset is probably the ability to adjust the width of the eyes, as the focal length doesn't seem to make any difference at all, and didn't work well right out of the box(one side would push out faster than the other, making the screen crooked and cause popping and shifting of the device).
with that said, this product is great, first i'll break it down into pros and cons
pros:
light, sturdy plastic
strong magnet to keep front door closed
ability to adjust how far eyes are and distance phone is from face
great lenses
comfortable straps
comfortable face pads
cons
On my headset, about one half of the moving parts do not move correctly (specifically the knobs on the sides)
Does NOT fit over glasses
can get very hot and sweaty
no nose pad and lets light in through nose piece
(not really a con but this product can NOT be used to watch normal video, only side by side double video, despite what other reviewers say, it just doesn't work)
I would have given this product a higher rating if all the features worked as intended, however the construction is clearly 2nd rate, and this should have never gone through qc of any kind.
some additional tips and tricks to ge the most out of this headset:
I have tried many different movie watching apps, here is a list of come of my favorites (iOS)
Vrplayer $2
best I've found so far. simple, side by side large viewing experience. doesn't over heat your phone, easy to use, plenty of features, well worth the $2
Zeiss VROne cinema free
didn't set out to find the "movie going" experience, just wanted to watch movies in an "IMAX" like situation, very big and in your face. this app is cool, but will heat up your phone like crazy, due to rendering 360 degree theatre that doesn't even do anything. the picture is small and extremely hard to see detail (iPhone 6).
Homed 360 vr free
good option, but will alter the format of your movies with no options to change them back. squishes them A LOT horizontally. very limited features.
Mobile vr station $6
terrible user interface, many hidden fees, not worth $6
other useful accessories to have:
a good microfiber cloth: being a glasses wearer my entire life, i can recognize a cheap lens cloth easily, and the one that comes with this set is one. usually these small ones end up making thing worse or scratch whatever your trying to clean. good ones aren't expensive if you buy in bulk, like the amazon basic ones
nice headphones: to really get in the mood of a movie, sound is very important. i love inkd skull candies and their lifetime warranty, but if i wanted to go all out and wasn't worrying about heat stroke i would use my Sony MDRZX770BT bluetooth headphones. no wires, 17 hour battery life, extremely comfortable and the sound is excellent. they do get hot and sweaty in warm whether but will really get you in the zone.
a comfortable chair with good neck support
for long watching with these, i prefer to be leaning back so the device doesn't feel as if its hanging on my face as much as resting on it.
your favorite snack
for obvious reasons
hope this helps!
The headset is very comfortable and I felt fine wearing it for extended periods of time. The IPD adjustment was great and allowed me to get the perfect distance. The lenses produce a picture is very clear on my 5.7" 2,560x1,440 screen. I love the magnetic mechanism that holds the door shut, it feels very secure. There is a cutout that allows access to headphone and charging ports.
All the cons of this product are fairly minor. I had to readjust one of the foam cushions that holds the phone in place due to it hitting the power button, but this was a very quick and easy fix. The FOV isn't the greatest, but it is sufficient, and I didn't expect it to be on the same level as the Rift or Vive.
Overall I would highly recommend this product to anyone interested in experiencing VR before committing to a more expensive solution. This product has me very excited for the future of VR.
The lenses of the HMD are much better quality than a standard Cardboard HMD and offer an Inter Papillary Distance (IPD) adjustment. This make sit much easier to find the sweet spot for a more comfortable viewing experience.
The front cover of the device comes off and offers a bit better cooling when the phone gets hot. It also allows the camera of the phone to see forward, if the program needs the camera. There is enough room through the sides of the HMD for USB cables to be plugged in so the device can be used while plugged in (charging) or tethered to the PC for use as a second display.
All in all a fine piece of Kit and I would strongly recommend it for anyone looking yo get into VR without the high price of a more involved system.
