Product Description

AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Expansion Box The portable Thunderbolt™ 2 PCIe expansion box provides an additional PCIe slot for systems that do not support or have enough available space for expansion cards. The external Thunderbolt 2 connection allows you to daisy-chain up to 5 additional Thunderbolt devices, making this the ideal plug and play companion especially when you have to take your system with you. Replacing the card is a simple matter of removing three hand tightening screws, so no tools are required. 4K Workflow with Thunderbolt 2 Technology Thunderbolt 2 technology incorporates DisplayPort 1.2 support, which allows for video streaming to a single 4K video monitor. If you are a video editor, you can now use a single port to connect your external Thunderbolt devices and a 4K display 4 Lane PCI Express 2.0 Compliant Interface The PCIe (x16) slot accepts half-length, full-height, double-width cards and provides a maximum of 25W. Replacing the card can be done without tools, simply by removing two hand tightening screws for the chassis and one for the card. Provides Two Thunderbolt 2 Ports for Daisy-Chain The second Thunderbolt 2 port lets you daisy-chain up to five Thunderbolt devices together. For example, you can attach additional external drives and even a display, all connected to the computer through a single cable.

Fantastic little device which I have used for an external graphics card setup. It does have a few limitations like only being able to supply 25 watts through the PCIe port, but these shortcomings are easy to overcome. Don't be fooled by the "Does NOT support graphics cards" description, it works just fine. I have previously used the Sonnet Echo Express SE II for external graphics cards, but at twice the cost I would recommend this instead. Notice that the Sonnet has two PCIe ports, but for graphics card purposes it gave me a headache getting the whole setup to work. The eGPU community thinks it might be the PCIe multiplexer at work.

To overcome the 25 watt PCIe limit I use a powered PCIe riser together with an external ATX power supply. The beauty here is the original power supply is no longer needed as all the needed power comes from the PCIe riser.

I cannot comment on the fan noise since I have unplugged mine.

A Thunderbolt cable was included!

For more details about using this product in regards to external graphics card setups, I have written a small guide here: https://odd-one-out.serek.eu/thunderbolt-2-egpu-setup-using-akitio-thunder2/

In short, I highly recommend this device for DIY external graphics card setups. I have not found anything that beats this device for performance (in terms of bandwidth) to price ratio.

I use the Akitio T2 to run an external graphics card (Zotac GTX980ti AMP and also a GTX960) on my mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15". Internal screen with external graphics card only works in Windows 7 and 8 as Nvida optimus does now work in Windows 10. The GTX980ti is long to fit so the back plate had to be bent. Booting Windows when running eGPU is a game of chance but when it boots it works perfectly even when overclocking the GPU. Overall I am pretty happy with the Akitio T2 and I am using it in a way it is not built for.

They say on the Akitio website that the Akitio Thunder2 PCIe Box (this product) is not supported on Boot Camp, or Windows, however on my 2012 Macbook Pro running Windows 7 Professional through Boot Camp this device was basically plug and play. I have my PCIe 1x professional sound card up and running with my Macbook through Windows and was finally able to ditch my big bulky desktop. I just loaded my sound cards drivers and software and I was up and running. The Akitio Thunder2 PICe Box was one of the best purchases I made in 2015. Basically effortless to install. I LOVE it !!!

Great cost effective solution for BlackMagic Decklink PCI cards. I migrated from an older mac tower with internal PCI slots to an iMac. So I needed to get from thunderbolt to my HD Extreme card for use in Resolve 12 and Adobe CC. Worked right out of the box and is no louder than an external drive. No delay/picture sync issues. So $200 kept my card going without having to upgrade to Thunderbolt Express or downgrade to the Mini Monitor.

Just finished pulling this apart and building an eGPU. Running my GTX 970-STRIX externally with only about 15fps loss from when it was in my desktop. AMAZING.

WARNING:

On windows systems, a DSDT override is almost always needed, I was able to get it working with a DSDT override without Setup1.X

Read about ACPI before considering this for an eGPU. Took me almost a month to get my DSDT to compile, almost had to return it. Alas I got it working and its unreal.

I also used this for a graphics card setup by adding an external power supply (used the GTX 970 Mini, which fits perfectly inside this and the EVGA 500W power supply). Works great and I'm very happy with this setup! I'm now getting 60FPS with Fallout 4 on ultra on a late 2014 Macbook Pro Vs. barely 20 fps at 720p on low before. If you're thinking about building an eGPU that isn't going to cost as much as whole new desktop PC, this is the way to go.

Build quality is solid and it looks nice on my desk. Although word of warning to anyone looking to modify this into an eGPU setup: If you want to put the outer casing back on, you'll need to modify it for airflow and extra cabling. That being said, it doesn't look exceptionally horrible with the case off. If you keep it front facing forward on your desk, no one will even notice it's missing it's outer case. Either way, it does the job it's supposed to do.

Excellent product, worked as expected and I was able to fit a Zotac gtx 1060 mini inside this set up perfectly! Took my MacBook Air from 20FPS with intel graphics at lowest settings to 60FPS max settings and only took about 5 minutes to install.

Works perfectly. My eGPU implementation used a RM750 power supply and a EVGA GTX 780 Ti graphics card via thunderbolt.
