We purchased this to accompany studies of the era for my 11 year old son. Amazon describes it as a book appropriate fro 10-18 year olds. 18 year olds, maybe. 10 or 11 year olds, definitely not. Explicit discussions of sexual relations using F words to describe it- very much not an appropriate book for kids.

HISTORICAL FICTION AT ITS BEST ...

Akon's Mission is Jeremy Brown's breakout novel. After writing several solid and enjoyable books thorugh which he has developed his writing muscles (most notably his excellent series featuring mixed martial artist Woodshed Wallace), Brown has now taken his storytelling skills to the next level. Akon's Mission is filled with historical action while not being dragged down by historical detail. His characters have a complex depth, which straddles not only the historical times in which the story is set, but makes them pertinent to today. Brown has developed the ability as a writer to whisk the reader completely into another world filled with breathless dangers -- a world and experience to which we want to return again and again.

Prepare for a fast ride. And don't try to predict where you'll end up.

This quick moving novel pulls you in and then you've gotta hold on for the ride. After introducing the main character and setting the scene, I found myself trying to anticipate where the story was going to take me next. But as soon as I started getting comfortable and thinking about what might happen next, the story flipped on its side and I was trying to catch up. And then it happened again. And again.
It's not a love story or a buddy adventure. There aren't paragraphs devoted to the texture and aroma of the food. It's fast paced action packed introduction into the life of a Spartan warrior. It's obvious that research went into getting accurate details of the era but the story does not get unneccessarily bogged down. When something is called "Book 1" I wonder if it's going to leave enough intrigue to make me want to come back for subsequent books. But this story moves so fast that it was over before I knew it and I need to know find out the next chapter in Akon's life. Given what's happened in this book, there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns throughout this series.
As certain events unfolded, I was unsure if I agreed with the actions of the title character. For me, that enhanced the experience because I found myself wondering what his motivations were, who should be trusted, would he regret those decisions? But it's not a world of black and white with easy choices. And Akon might not always make the right one. But it's certainly a ride that i intend on seeing through. Bring on the next.
