Award winning Chef/Restaurateur Luigi Diotaiuti is a world –renowned authority on Italian cooking and living. A celebrity favorite for decades, the certified Sommelier and television personality was born in a farm near Lagonegro, in the mountains of the Southern Italian province of Basilicata. He completed his culinary degree at the Culinary School in the beautiful seaside town of Maratea. That was the launching of his prestigious career which would lead him to legendary locales before settling in Washington, DC and becoming a member of the American Chefs Corps network through the U.S. Department of State. In March 2013, Chef Luigi prepared a “Beauty of Basilicata” Dinner at the James Beard Foundation which he later portrayed in his first documentary short film entitled The Beauty of Basilicata Dinner at the James Beard Foundation in order to pay homage to the cuisine of his homeland. He opened Al Tiramisu restaurant in 1996, after having worked in several legendary Italian restaurants in Washington, DC. Chef Luigi’s background, training, and talent all provide Al Tiramisu patrons a consistently exciting cuisine, allying authentic Italian fare with elevated touches. It is for this reason that he was awarded the coveted “Insegna del Ristorante Italiano,” the seal of approval by the President of Italy. In 2013, Al Tiramisu was also awarded Slow Food DC’s Snail of Approval award. His commitment to authentic, respectable and sustainable food practices is witnessed through his charitable efforts. Chef Luigi spends the little free time he has attending and conducting demonstrations at farmer’s markets, participating in culinary competitions, and hosting benefit events. Chef Luigi returns to Italy multiple times each year to help “reclaim” and promote recipes, farming techniques, and culinary practices on the verge of extinction. When he is not cooking for celebrities like Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and actor George Clooney, Chef Luigi makes frequent appearances on US and Italian television and has been featured in countless print media articles.
