If I had to describe this memoir in one word it would be perseverance. Toni exposes the effects of a toxic society and toxic religion, that combine to create Southern Inhospitably, on a child's development. This is Toni's chronicle of her escape.
As I read her story, the vivid descriptions of places and events pulls you in as a first person observer. Each chapter is like a short story detailing events and locations at a point in her life. Some of the chapters are tragic, some are humorous, and some show the dogged persistence of always moving forward and finally finding some sanity.
