Review

5 Stars June 19, 2017 By MamaMaisyVerified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is for: Alaska Man: A Memoir of Growing Up and Living in the Wilds of Alaska (Kindle Edition)This was a really interesting account! This book tells one man's story of essentially growing up in the Alaskan wilderness. The author, George was originally from Michigan but always had a dream as a boy of going to Alaska and becoming a fisherman and hunter for a living and for life. His father had owned a hardware-type store and was an experienced pilot. George also leaned how to fly, and started developing the skills that he would later find invaluable. So George was able to convince his parents to go to Alaska as a family to check it out. His brother bought land, and George decided to stay where he had always longed to be. So he and his brother got themselves accustomed to the harsh land, with its unforgiving winters, and untamed landscapes. They really go through so much drama and so many hardships throughout this story, it is incredible! Not only is it a serious feat to be able to fish and hunt and make a living in this area of Alaska, but it is also incredibly difficult dealing with some of the people they come across. There are troopers trying to pick them out on false hunting and fishing accusations (not to mention the times when they are actually in the wrong). There are also such difficult circumstances, that the people of the land are quite brutal, and will steal and fight for precious resources. This team of brothers is pretty scrappy, with the older brother an Army Special Forces Veteran, and with George being willing to fight or shoot anyone who tries to cross him. These tales may be pretty tough, but I also found them inspiring, because I personally am really interested in survival skills and the ability to thrive in the extreme wilderness. Although I personally do not hunt or fish, I know that if I lived in this type of area and climate, it would be an absolute necessity. Aside from the survival and hunting aspects of this book, there is also the backstories of the people involved, so you really feel like you get to know them during these times. Overall, I really enjoyed the read, and I would recommend this book to anyone else who would appreciate the characters and subject matter. Well done.

Format: Paperback A great book! I was unable to put it down at all. I enjoyed reading about all his adventures from taking on the Huge waves of the sea to disarming a man with a pistol. I can not wait until the next book comes. The next book needs to out now George.

About the Author

Alaska Man- The story of how legends are sought and dreams come true. George Davis has spent his life pioneering Alaska’s coastline from Haines to Cordova that he affectionately named “The Lost Coast.” He left home in Michigan to move to Alaska with his oldest brother at the age of 15. George has a diverse resume of professions ranging from commercial fishing, sport fish guiding, adventure guiding, building lodges in the remote wilderness, entrepreneurship, marketing, flying, running boats, and adventure video production. He is always on the cutting edge in his numerous chosen professions. The inspiration to publish Alaska Man came from the countless larger than life adventures, and his love to share his affection for Alaska’s wilderness with the world. Alaska Woman - Jill Davis has always been an adventurer, seeking out others that shared her passions. When she met George it was the perfect match. As soon as fate brought them together they have been a force to be reckoned with in the wilds of Alaska. Jill grew up in Cordova, Alaska commercial fishing, sport fishing, flying airplanes, and becoming an entrepreneur. One of her many passions is writing. She excelled in the sport fish and adventure guide industry, and built Icy Bay Lodge with George. After selling the lodge, Jill was able to have more time to pursue her writing. George and Jill started Alaska Wild Adventures, filming and documenting true life living off of the grid in the wilds of Alaska. Through Alaska Man novels George and Jill are able to give this special gift of a true legacy. The story of how legends are sought and dreams come true.
