Format: Perfect Paperback
Jim Hale's adventures growing up in Alaska of the '60s and '70s read like a collection of essays from Outside Magazine. Jon Krakauer could have (should have?) written this book. "An Alaskan Life of High Adventure" is not really a chronological recitation, but a volume of short stories and vignettes. These include, but are not limited to:

--the family home being destroyed in the Good Friday Earthquake
--spending a night trapped on Mt. Hood
--summiting Mt. McKinley at the age of 21
--forming his own guide service at 23
--leading the first-ever hang gliding expedition off McKinley's summit
--surviving an avalanche
--losing friends to climbing deaths
--airborne and trapped between Mt. Huntington and Mt. Hunter
--laid low by a devastating death in the family
--returning as the "Denali Dinosaurs" 26 years later

Could life get any better than to be a dashing young climbing guide, when McKinley was not yet crowded, writing the formative chapters of adventure on North America's premier playground? For Hale, a series of events cause him to ponder whether there is a different kind of high adventure to which he is being drawn, even as it demands his very soul.

I myself spent most of my working years in the mountains both as a mountaineering instuctor and guide.I can appreciate the resposibilty of being in dangerous situations with clients, its not easy. Guiding on a mountain such as Mt.McKinley (Denali) is a step above most of the more popular guiding occupations in America. It is a must read for those who aspire to this adventurous life style and those who would like a glimpse into the Alaskan way of life.I could perhaps handle the mountain side of Jims story but the use and danger of the Alaskan air flights well I would rather walk. You will not be disappointed with this book... worth every penny...... I went to high school with Jim and always looked up to him there, as he was a natural leader. This book is for anyone interested in the outdoors generally and Alaska's rugged mountains, specifically. It also well documents Jim's and his wife's personal and spiritual growth. It is at once awe inspiring and revelatory. Thanks Jim
