The band returned in 1997 with ALBUM OF THE YEAR, which became Faith No More's first and only number one album. It features members of the current lineup: Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards) Billy Gould (bass) Jon Hudson (guitar), and Mike Patton (vocals). Recorded mostly in Gould's home studio, the album produced three singles: "Ashes to "Ashes," "Last Cup of Sorrow" and "Stripsearch." In the liner notes, Bottum writes: "We were definitely referencing our musical roots as well, going back to darker tones visited in Angel Dust ...in retrospect it feels really strong and an undeniably prolific chapter in what we ultimately set out to do." ALBUM OF THE YEAR's eight bonus tracks also include live versions of the album track "Collision" and the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic, "This Guy's In Love With You," plus rare mixes of "Last Cup of Sorrow," "Pristina" and more.

Underrated album of the year of 1998.

Man. I can't believe it's really been that friggin' long. 1998. ouch, I'm old. FNM is finally getting the respect they deserve it seems, and in retrospect more people are giving this album another chance and good for them, because some of FNM's best material is on this album. Now on the scheme of things, Album of the Year is still not a perfect album, but it was a return to the form the band was in during their high point of the Angeldust era, where the band was playing dark, heavy, and driving, hit-you-in-the-face agression. It's no doubt that Patton was peaking, and some of the band's best material is on this album (Collision, Ashes to Ashes). What gives this album a bad reputation is that some of their worst material is on here too (She Loves Me Not, Home Sick Home).

Overall, this is a great album that any FNM fan worth his salt deserves to give this album a listen. Not all the songs are keepers, but if you were buying it ala carte, you could do worse than to pick up Collision, Stripsearch, Last cup of Sorrow, Helpless, Mouth to Mouth, Ashes to Ashes, Got That Feeling, and Pristina (EDIT: And Paths of Glory!). Skip the rest.

I must say that i'm disappointed by the bonus disc this time around. The only real bonus tracks are Light Up and Let Go and The Big Kahuna, which are arguably better than the bad songs on the main album (note: pick these songs over She Loves me Not and Home Sick Home if you're going ala carte), but where's the FNM/Sparks mashup from the same time period?

Words can't describe Faith No More. For those who just identify the band by Epic and flopping fish videos you're missing the point completely. This is a band that while having their own sound, put no value in boundaries. They will and have tried almost anything musically. I really can't describe this album and honestly I don't want to. To try and define it would almost cheapen it. It has to heard to be appreciated and it's truly a "either you get it or you don't" type thing. Aside from having probably the greatest vocalist in modern music the band itself is beyond talented. As a final album it has everything we came to love about FNM...and instead of providing closure just left most saddened and wanting more. The remaster sounds amazing and the second disc of extras and b-sides is well worth the few extra $$$. If you're just a casual fan who maybe bought Real Thing back in the day you'll find something on this you like. Or say you stopped at King for a Day? You'll find something on this you like. If you already own this and know what I'm trying to get at? Why are you even reading this? Unless you're interested in the extra disc? (Already covered that). Basically just buy this. If you don't own this you should. *****

I've had the CD since it came out and saw their final full tour supporting this album. It's Faith No More, so throw your preconceptions out the window. I think this would've been an excellent follow up to Angel Dust, it hops genres, rocks out, and has some really beautiful moments. But go read the CD review if you want to know more about the album itself. I don't have a waveform analyzer, and I can't tell you what it rates on the loudness wars meter, I just have two ears and a heart. This record sounds fantastic. The Mr. Bungle "Plain Records" re-releases sound flat, like they were just ripped from a CD and pressed as cheaply as possible. I wasn't expecting much, just cool to own AOTY without paying $300-400 for a UK pressing. This is SO worth it. Dynamic, bass is thumping, drums and snare ATTACK and are crisp as hell, the guitars ring out and Patton's voice is perfect ni the mix. This sounds mastered for an analog format. Have no doubts on purchasing this one - worth every penny!

This Album on vinyl has to be one of the best sounding music itself. The best songs are Collision and Last cup of sorrow those 2 are the ones to definitely listen to. Definitely Order. It is worth it! Came as the Music On Vinyl Version.

I was really excited when it was announced this album was being reissued on vinyl. I believe the first 2,000 copies were done on gold and then the rest on black. I unfortunately wasn't lucky enough to get the gold pressing but in the end it doesn't really matter. This album is a shining moment of why Faith No More was and always will be the best at what they do/did. This album has a little bit of soul, a little bit of metal, a little bit of funk; hell, it has a little bit of everything and that's what makes it 100% awesome. If you don't have this in your rotation I suggest you buy it immediately or your ears will regret your brains poor decision.

Probably one of the weaker albums from Faith No More. There are some really good/classic tracks on this album like Collision and Last Cup of Sorrow. However this is one of the few Faith No More albums that I find myself skipping tracks and this is their only album that I find myself bored with at times. Luckily they came back years later and released the amazing Sol Invictus.

I've loved this album for years, but I found this new 2016 edition to be a disappointment. First impressions were that I couldn't tell any audio improvements on this remaster (not that the original had any glaring issues). The 4 "mix" tracks on disc 2 didn't do anything for me. I would have preferred more live stuff or rarities/b-sides. Looks like the King for a Day reissue got a much better bonus disc.

Faith No More is probably best known for their breakthrough album "The Real Thing", but the band continued to evolve and push the boundaries of music with each new release. "Album of the Year" was no exception. With Mike Patton's insane vocal delivery he's all over the place on this record... and that's a good thing. From his lounge style singing to all out screaming psychotic bursts of energy and everything in between, your ears will be delighted and bleeding! The band is super tight and mixes it up nicely for one incredibly diverse album. There's not one throwaway track on this album, each one is a masterpiece unto itself. So stop reading this stupid review and drop this in your cart.
