Purchase options and add-ons
• Shows how the astrological cycle around the signs of the zodiac represents the alchemical transformation of consciousness and chakra awakening
• Expands the meaning of each astrological sign based on its association with the chakras and the alchemical transmutation cycle from lead to gold
• Offers sample chart analyses to show how you can discover your spiritual challenges and opportunities
Demonstrating the connections between astrology, alchemy, and yoga, Frederick Baker reveals how he discovered their correspondences by rotating the natural order of the zodiac, placing Aquarius and Capricorn at the bottom and Cancer and Leo at the top, to reflect the alchemical order of metals from lead to gold. is Alchemical Tantric Arrangement then revealed a corresponding alchemical order of the seven traditional planets--from Saturn (lead) to Sun (gold)--and also aligned with the seven chakras and the three major energy channels (nadis) of the Tantric yoga system, including the channel through which Kundalini energy rises from root chakra to crown chakra.
Baker uses these rediscovered correspondences to expand the meaning of each astrological sign based on their association with the chakras, the alchemical transmutation cycle from lead to gold, and the wisdom of ancient myth. He also offers expanded meanings for each chakra in association with the twelve signs of the zodiac and their ruling planets as well as new insights into the influence of Chiron and Eris. The author provides a complete analysis of his own birth chart as well as Alchemical Tantric Astrology insights into significant events over the past few decades, including the intense changes of 2020.
Baker’s revolutionary new take on our individual spiritual journeys shows how the astrological cycle around the signs of the zodiac represents the alchemical and Tantric transformation of consciousness and the natural path of spiritual unfolding.

Review
“An original contribution and an innovative guide that illuminates significant and heretofore hidden dimensions of astrological theory and practice.” ― Phillip Charles Lucas, Ph.D., professor of religious studies at Stetson University
“Alchemical Tantric Astrology is a profound marriage of three sets of symbols. They all come together as the serpent fully uncoils at the crown, unveiled by the Moon’s nodes. Hermes’s signposts on the way to self-realization light them up as never before! Creative and original--not to be missed!” ― Michael Burton, Ph.D., licensed acupuncturist and licensed astrological counselor
“A unique and useful integration of cosmology, chakras and metals, spiritual yoga, and meditations.” ― Pratibha Gramann, Ph.D., transcendental psychologist, scholar, yoga therapist, and ayurveda educator
“Frederick Baker’s wit and scholarly approach emboss a brilliant and highly original formation that holds great promise for all students of astrology and yoga.” ― Nancy Kurtz, astrologer
“Speaking in symbols we discuss a shared truth that is deeper than words can describe. When we can see solid, clear intersections across symbolic systems, we see truths deeper than any system alone could say. Frederick Baker has given us this, through his blessed lifelong focus, a new weave of our oldest views of the ‘beyond verbal,’ weaving those shared beauties into a yet deeper view of our reality.” ― Michael Bartlow, pianist, composer, and writer
“Baker’s flowing contemplation of the alchemical qualities of the signs and planetary archetypes in the dynamic river of kundalini rising astounds me. It is magnificent! Alchemical Tantric Astrology activates your subtle energy centers--chakras--while you are reading it. His brilliant integration of the most complex pathways of human subtle perception is very simple and clear. It is the beginning of a new astrological paradigm--astrology rising to its full alchemical potential. This is a must-read for all astrologers and those seeking spiritual illumination. Alchemical Tantric Astrology is the astrology of the Age of Aquarius because it is sourced in traditional astrology expanded to the very recent discoveries of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, and Eris since 1781. Bravo! Your AstroYoga Meditation is a rocket booster!” ― Barbara Hand Clow, author of Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini
"Baker’s perspective, stemming from years as a researcher and practitioner of these arts, certainly bolsters the knowledge on these subjects and integrate them in a way that can be practically applied in one’s life for energetic attunement with the zodiacal energy. He has a way of sharing his wisdom that makes it easily accessible to readers, both logically and intuitively. There is plenty of information for readers to gain from Alchemical Tantric Astrology, and it is a wonderful book for readers to become acquainted with Hermetic Astrology." ― Alanna Kali, Musing Mystical

The Alchemical Arrangement
When the traditional planetary rulers of the twelve signs and the alchemical metals associated with the planets are added to the wheel of the zodiac, then the traditional planetary rulers of the signs and their associated metals share a pair of signs.
In a manner similar to “translating” the original Rosetta Stone, we have accomplished the first step in our process of translation by creating the “alchemical arrangement” of the signs. This arrangement puts Saturn and its alchemical metal, lead, at the bottom and the Sun and its alchemical metal, gold, at the top. The resulting order illuminates the understanding of alchemy as the process of “transforming lead into gold.”
The Alchemical Arrangement of the signs with their planetary rulers and associated alchemical metals around the Zodiac “wheel,” with Leo (Sun/Gold) and Cancer (Moon/Silver) at the top:
LEO
Sun - Gold
Moon - Silver CANCER
VIRGO
Mercury - Mercury GEMINI
LIBRA Venus - Copper VACCA/TAURUS
SCORPIO Mars - Iron ARIES
SAGITTARIUS Jupiter - Tin PISCES
CAPRICORN Saturn - Lead AQUARIUS
Medieval alchemy acknowledged a correlation between planets in the heavens and metals in the earth: “AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.” In fact they used the same symbols for both metals and planets.
Alchemy’s goal in a profound sense is of transforming lead into gold, a metaphor for the transformation of consciousness. We can see in the progression of the metals from grey lead, to useful tin and iron, to beautiful copper, shiny silver, and glistening gold, a movement toward more beauty and value. Likewise, the goal of the spiritual path is the transformation of consciousness from more conditioned patterns of thinking and behavior to freedom and enlightenment.
Adding the Tantric Connection
Observe that the seven traditional planets and their seven alchemical metals correspond perfectly with the seven chakras of tantric yoga. Yoga practitioners are familiar with the subtle energy wheels or chakras of Tantric Yoga. The chakras are most often seven in number and are associated with areas of the human physical body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Various descriptions of the chakras and their symbolism will be developed more fully below and in the Appendix.
The seven planetary metals correlate with the seven chakras, from lead at the bottom or root chakra to gold at the top or crown chakra. Importantly, the overlay creates a perfect co-relation between the central heart chakra’s twelve petals, the twelve signs of the zodiac, and the twelve houses of astrology. The heart chakra is central to the chakra system with three chakras above and three below, and its symbol is a six-pointed star of two interlocking triangles pointing up and down. Thus the center of the chakra system is perfectly aligned with the central point of the astrology chart.
Beginning with Capricorn and Aquarius on the bottom of the zodiac wheel (relating to the 1st chakra), note that both of these signs were traditionally ruled by Saturn, whose metal is lead in Alchemy, also known as the prima materia or the primary material of the alchemical process of transformation. Moving upward, the other pairs of signs are: Sagittarius and Pisces, ruled by Jupiter (alchemical metal tin, 2nd chakra); Scorpio and Aries (Mars/iron, 3rd chakra); Libra and Taurus (Venus/copper, 4th chakra); Virgo and Gemini (Mercury/mercury, 5th chakra); Cancer, ruled by the Moon, which is related to silver, and the 6th chakra; and finally Leo, ruled by the golden Sun and related to the 7th or the thousand-petaled lotus crown chakra.
This arrangement symbolizes what the alchemists called “The Philosopher’s Stone,” a tool with the legendary alchemical ability to transform lead into gold. Similarly, in the chakra system, the movement upward through the chakras follows the awakening of a powerful transformative energy called “kundalini” and its movement through the seven chakras and their seven associated subtle elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether, sound, and light -- five traditional elements plus two super-subtle elements).
The Alchemy of the Trans-Saturnian Planets
Medieval alchemists were aware of seven planets in the heavens (including the Sun and Moon) and correlated them with seven metals in the earth. The “accidental” discovery by amateur astronomer William Herschel in 1781 of a possibly new planet opened the way for amazing synchronicity. Johann Bode, a German astronomer who calculated the new planet’s orbit, thought that the newly discovered planet should be named for Saturn’s father, “Ouranus,” divinity of the heavens, because Saturn had been named after Jupiter’s father. That is how the seventh planet from the Sun got the name “Uranus.” Interestingly, Johann Bode’s friend, chemist Martin Klaproth, in support of Bode’s name for the new planet, named the new element he discovered around this same time “uranium,” linking the planet Uranus with the radioactive element uranium. Eventually, astrologers assigned this new and unique planet Uranus as the ruler of the innovative sign Aquarius.
The alignment among the three disciplines of Astrology’s Rosetta Stone (astrology, alchemy, and tantra) presented above is more striking now when the planets beyond Saturn and their radioactive metals are added. When we observe that Uranus relates to the radioactive element uranium, that the next element in the Periodic Table radioactive element neptunium correlates with the planet discovered next, Neptune (the new ruler of Pisces), and radioactive element plutonium, next in the Periodic Table, correlates with Pluto (the new ruler of Scorpio), then the alignment among the three systems is even more striking.
The amazing progression of the more recently discovered planets and the radioactive elements named for them represents what in tantric yoga is called “the awakening of kundalini energy.” The outer circle of signs of the zodiac and their original ruling planets in the ATA represents the natural cycle of life and its revolution/evolution; while the direct inward/upward movement of energy via the Chiron portal and central nadi leads to involution/evolution. Although both paths hold potential for the evolution of consciousness, “revolution” suggests repetition, while “involution” implies a movement inward to the source/center.

About the author

• Author bio -- FREDERICK HAMILTON BAKER
Formal education includes an A.A. degree in Biological Science; a B.A. in Psychology; an M.A. in Archetypal Psychology; advanced studies in Counseling Psychology and School Counseling. I have a long history of study, professional experience, and teaching in the fields of astrology and yoga.
Transferring to the new UC Santa Cruz campus in 1965 began a notable period of my life, meeting many excellent professors of philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. In addition, the first year of attending UCSC brought me in contact with Zen teacher, Suzuki Roshi, and began my practice of meditation. Intensive study of Carl Jung’s works and learning with Santa Cruz astrologer, Lew Fein, began a lifelong interest in astrology, with its rich combination of myth, psyche, and cycles. A year in the Navy in Viet Nam was traumatic and revealing and provided me with travel to Japan and more Zen meditation experience.
I returned to UCSC in 1970 to complete a B.A. in Psychology, which included building a large redwood labyrinth on the campus. The construction had an alchemical result that led to meeting the Himalayan yogi, Baba Hari Dass, and the beginning of an ongoing practice of Ashtanga Yoga. I was taught by the master himself in the early years, which included the full practice of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Vedanta. Later I came in contact with other masters in the U.S. and in India for studies in Vastu, Ayurveda, and Vedic astrology.
My various studies led to travel and hitchhiking throughout Europe. Visiting power places took me as far as the great Labyrinth of Crete and back to the Spanish island of Formentera, where I met and studied with a French astrologer. I had a unique experience there, as described in the book, of hearing the “Music of the Spheres.” This experience occurred just after my 30th birthday, on Christmas Day, 1973, during an eclipse, and the closest approach of the comet Kohoutek. I consider these transformative and revelatory events to be fundamental to the development of my present book, since they motivated me to understand both the meaning of that rare astrological time and its relation to my extraordinary experiences.
Returning to California, I lived in and taught hatha yoga classes in a dance studio in downtown Oakland. Around this time I was especially fortunate to attend a workshop in San Francisco with Dane Rudhyar and Jose Arguelles on astrology and mandalas that inspired me to focus on the work of these two excellent teachers on astrology and the astrological chart as a mandala. Jose also inspired me to study more about the Maya culture and its calendar.
Next, I took part in two life-changing programs at Sonoma State University. The first was a graduate level experimental Humanistic Psychology Program, where we, the students, designed the curriculum and interviewed professors, learning about group process along the way. The second program was a Master’s program in archetypal psychology that began with studying Carl Jung’s collected works, and led into an in-depth study of archetypal psychotherapist James Hillman’s work. Professor Hillman was impressed enough with our program to come to our classes as a visiting professor and actively participate with our class for several years. My Master’s thesis was entitled “Hermes: Logos of Psyche” and included sections on astrology in the context of archetypal psychology.
It was at this time that I met my first wife, Jeannine Parvati, who was a midwife and herbalist. I assisted her in writing and publishing three books, with help from Richard Grossinger at North Atlantic Books and Bookpeople. Following this thread, we taught classes together and attended conferences on the general themes of parenting, natural childbirth, and pre and peri-natal psychology. In many ways I was not only a husband but also an apprentice to Jeannine, who was an advanced yogini, astrologer, herbalist, midwife, and teacher of woman-craft.
Since I was doing some astrology for Terence and Kat McKenna and helping in their mushroom business, this led to Jeannine becoming the midwife at the birth of their first child. I had access during this time to Terence’s great library and mind-altering conversations with this radical ethno-botanist and psychedelic explorer.
In the early 1980’s, Jeannine and I moved to rural Utah to pursue our home business and home education of our children. We had three do-it-yourself home births. Jeannine and I led Family Vision Quests in the red rock canyons of Utah with the help of a Piute Indian mentor, Red Cloud.
I eventually took a job with the State of Utah as an employment counselor, working primarily with veterans and families of children at risk of educational failure. The State of Utah paid me to take graduate classes in school counseling and psychological counseling at Utah State University and the University of Phoenix. I was not able to complete these programs as Jeannine became ill with hepatitis C and eventually passed away in my arms in 2005.
Returning once again to Santa Cruz, CA, I met my present wife, Judith Claire Joy, in 2007, who introduced me to many new friends and associates, including a truly amazing occult astrologer, Ronald L. Byrnes. I was focusing on the year 2012 and the Maya long-count calendar, and shared some of my writing with Richard Grossinger, who suggested I consider writing an introduction to Robert Sitler’s book for NAB on the Maya. Although an indigenous writer was eventually chosen for the job, appropriately, to write the Preface, Claire and I accompanied a group of Maya scholars (including Robert Sitler and John Major Jenkins) and Maya elders on a speaking and ceremonial tour of Guatamala and Izapa, Mexico, in 2010, certainly a wonderful prelude to the winter solstice of 2012 and the end of the Maya long-count calendar.
During the time described above, hints from astrology, alchemy, and yoga have coalesced into my present book with Inner Traditions, Alchemical Tantric Astrology. I presently lead a study group that I call “AstroYoga.” We meet as a group (until recently interrupted by the virus) on the new and full moons of each month. In these meetings new insights are arising, with the help of myth and science, to the connections between astrology and yoga and further to the DNA molecule and the siddhis or paranormal powers of yoga.

We are introduced to the ATA chart via Western Astrology's zodiac wheel, detailing each sign's "usual" planets and elements, AND their corresponding alchemical metals, chakras, deeper archetypes and mythology. I especially enjoy the way he weaves in some of the more obscure myths and figures, like Eris, Vacca, and Iris, giving each sign more dimension and dynamism. His organization and down to earth wording gives this otherwise pretty lofty subject matter an approachability for beginner and advanced astrologers alike. After reading the first section, I found that I was able to able to jump around, back and forth from chapter to chapter with ease; for this, I credit Baker's teaching skills, but it's also a testament to just how complementary and interconnected each of these "separate" systems really are.
The variety of examples and visuals (Hermetic charts, the ATA model in action, and traditional western zodiac wheel) are also incredibly helpful. Visual learners, this system is for you. I have already returned to this book for clarity and reference (and just plain enjoyment!) many times over. I am grateful to be able to use Baker's system along my own path, and can't wait to incorporate it in my assessments for others. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are at all curious about how to work with the wisdom of western astrology, alchemy, and/or tantra in your daily life.
after many years of study presents a richer and more complex way of looking at astrology. I did not give it
5***** because I believe the reader needs to have either a background in practical astrology or a serious
commitment to the study of astrology. Given this I highly recommend the book to such individuals.
It is worth the price and if you buy the book I think you should give it a serious read.
For me, this was a really powerful way to engage with astrology, as it united me both physically and spiritually. I was happy to learn more about ways astrology can be grounded into the physical realm, such as the elements and energy work/meditation/breathing exercises. This book truly helped me to discover the potency of astrology both inside myself and outside myself.
Additionally, Baker delves into the alchemy of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron too, which is something I hadn't read prior. He's certain about astrology paving the way towards a new future, and he does a good job of pointing out to the reader the current astrological happenings that are creating dynamic shifts in the world. Luckily, this systems helps frame these changes for the reader in a way that inspires hope, while also giving them advice on how to apply this system for better understanding their own personal astrological energy.
All in all, this has been one of the most insightful astrology books I've read this year. Whether you're interested in alchemy, Tantra, or astrology, there's something for you to gain!
