I was caught up in a wonderful world of alchemy and magic.
Malcolm Ward may have lost his way - or so it would seem. He is an alchemist - a rare "breed" who loves their solitude.
When one of his customers is killed by a fire elemental, Malcolm takes it personal. Since he is supposed to be the only one in Salt Lake City who can deal with Elementals, Malcolm is on the case.
I loved every page in this book. I was caught up in a chase for the murder, an intricate woven plot that made me turn the pages faster and faster to find out what happened next.
I can't wait to read the next book!!!
Yes, Malcom Ward is an alchemist. He runs a curio shop in Salt Lake City, just like the shops you used to find only in places like Woodstock, Haight Ashbury, and Key West. Now, of course, these shops are everywhere...including at your local shopping mall. Colorful crystals, dreamcatchers, unusual candles, and suggestive wooden figurines that make some older folks mildly uncomfortable. What's that about anyway?
Well, in author Kevin Wohler's take on modern America, there might be something truly mystical involved with the proliferation of these neo-new-age stores. In the 60's, we called it "vibe," but modern urban mystics (like ancient indigenous mystics) call it "energy." And, as modern quantum physicists are suggesting (see the movie "What the Bleep do We Know?"), Life, the Universe, and Everything is all about energy. How in touch we are with this energy--or so these scientists tell us--might have everything to do with humanity's true potential and ultimate survival.
But Malcolm Ward, though trained and loved by one of the world's foremost students of alchemy, has been letting his potential wane. Running a profitable and respectable shop in Salt Lake City takes a different kind of awareness, and having lost his love and his mentor, our unlikely protagonist has been steadily drifting towards the mundane day-to-day most Americans know all to well. But someone in Salt Lake City has a sharply focused and profoundly insidious interest in the knowledge and the skills Malcolm has been allowing to gather dust.
When the mayor's son goes missing after his beloved night club is mysteriously set ablaze, those in the know all point his mother towards Malcom. Slippage not withstanding, our shopkeeper is uniquely qualified to sort out the fire and, perhaps, even locate the missing young man. In the ensuing adventure that is The Alchemist's Notebook, you will be dragged (quite willingly!) into the "other" Salt Lake City, a place where magic, sorcery, and yes, even alchemy, exist right alongside what J.K. Rowling calls "muggles," ordinary folks, going about life as they always have: either naively or deliberately unaware of the energies that binds all things together.
Be prepared for adventure, danger, romance, and surprise. The Alchemist's Notebook is a great read!
I look forward to further tales in the Village Alchemist Series!
