This is a great inexpensive book too give too a new comer...I paid $4 for it on Amazon and like it...the cover might not take but so much wear and tear, but for the price, the reader will hopefully reap the benefits of its knowledge way before the cover goes...

This book is my bible. It is the history of Alcoholics Anonymous from the mid-1930's to its first publication in 1939. Everyone should read this history book, if you like social histories. Who knew that recovery from addiction is primarily a spiritual awakening and leads to a life of compassion, not unlike the histories of the other great spiritual traditions of the past 3 millennia. Enjoy! And, if you have a drinking or other addiction problem, it may just save you life, as an added bonus (no extra charge!).

If you need help and an introduction to AA this first issue is the true, successful program having the highest percentage of recovery. Future editions were edited to the point of loosing simplicity and focus on God and prayer as the progress to recovery. Other editions seems to make AA, meetings the focus to recovery. Though important the true path can be found in this simple book. It works. I know as a recovered alcoholic.

This paperback is perfect. The Anonymous Press people were filling a void by publishing this. It could be found nowhere else. Then General Services started to print a reproduction and they decided to stop production and closeout their remaining stock. Class act.

I been in the program for three months and reading this book enables me to understand my alcoholism. This book is great to educate the ones still suffering from this disease that there is help out here for them! I encourage all AA members to buy the 1st edition because it is a classic and I thank BIll W and Dr.Bob for finding this program and peace be with them!

The Rosetta Stone of recovery. The main difference between this and the later editions is the stories. You can see the wisdom in replacing some of them for each new edition since this one, but it is fascinating to read and wonder what it must have felt like for these pioneers of the program to have discovered a 'solution' to their problem(s).

The original re-print of the Big Book before any changes is an interesting look back at what the first members in this program of recovery read. I read it to get a feel of what they must have been feeling, a sense of the time, era, when it was new. I personally felt a sense of reverence for it.

This is one of those books everyone should read, like the bible. Not only is it educational, but it will keep your interest. The 12-steps suggested are a way to live your life, not just for those suffering form addiction, but for anyone who strives to move forward and be a better human being. Personally, I don't know anyone whose life has not been touched by addiction, one way or another. This book gives you the best insight into the darkness of addiction and what addicts go though. No one chooses to be here...
