Wonderful fast-paced game of luck and deduction
Love Letter is one of the best card games I've ever played. It is a fast-paced game of luck and deduction for 2–4 players. Its setup is quick and the gameplay is simple for anyone and everyone. The game contains 16 game cards, 4 reference cards and 13 wooden tokens of affection (red cube in this version). In Love Letter the players compete for the heart of the Princess by trying to pass her a love letter, while keeping other players’ letters away. The setup is easy. Players shuffle the 16 cards and form a drawing deck. The first card is removed from the game (with 2 players 3 extra cards are removed), and each player gets one card from the drawing deck. On a turn, a player takes the top card from the deck and plays one of the two cards in his/her hand by playing it face up on the discard pile. Then the card effect is applied and either a player is knocked out of the round, or the turn passes to the player on your left. At the end of the round if only one player is left she gets a token of affection, if more than one player is left, the player with the highest value card gets the token. A player wins the game after winning a number of tokens based on the number of players. The cards: Guard (1) – Guess a non-Guard card and choose a player. If that player has that card, she is out of the round. There are 5 Guard cards. Priest (2) - Look at another player's hand. There are 2 Priest cards. Barron (3) - Compare hands with another player. The player with the lower value card is out of the round. There are 2 Barron cards. Handmaid (4) - Ignore all effects from other players’ cards until your next turn. There are 2 Handmaid cards. Prince (5) - Choose any player including yourself to discard his or her hand and draw a new card. There are 2 Prince cards. King (6) – Trade hands with another player. Countess (7) – If you have this card and the King or Prince in your hand, you must discard the Countess. Princess (8) – If you discard this card you are out of the round. Thus, as a player you have to find a good balance between high-value, high-risk cards that can make you a target, and low-value, low-risk cards that may cost you the token of affection. Overall, Love Letter is a great game, with a high replay value. It is not expensive (usually goes for around $8 on amazon, with a retail price of $12), and is lightweight, which means you can take it on the road. More game reviews on instagram, @ the_review_board

This is a very simple game with easy set up and easy play.
It is fairly easy to understand the rules and it took us about 3 minutes to read the rules. There is also a small 'refresher card' to remind you of each person, how many people of each kind there are and what each kind does. (For example, 1 princess, 4 guards etc)

Each of the cards have directions on them and they are very clear. For example: If you discard this card, then you are out of this round. If you draw a knight card when you have this card in your hand, you must discard this card.

Essentially you have a hand of one card and you want to keep the card that will get you closest to the princess. Through the process of drawing new cards, discarding cards, peaking, trading etc. you will always keep one card in your hand that you believe will get you closest to her. If at the end of the round you are the closest person to the princess then you get a love token (A little wood square). The game is over when you have the correct number of love tokens.

I would say that although you can play this with 2 people, it is not as fun as if you play with more people. In fact, I would say the minimum number of people you need to make this game fun is 3 and I would never suggest you play it with 2. Other than that, everything works exactly as anticipated.

This is an outstanding family game. My wife, ten-year old daughter and I love it. It may seem as though 16 cards won't make a game, but this game creator nailed it.

The rules are simple: You start with one card. Each turn, you draw one card and discard one card. Each card/character has different effects, which take place upon discarding a card. Once the draw pile is exhausted, whoever has the highest-numbered card (1 through 8) wins that round and earns a "token of affection" from the princess. The amount of people playing determines that amount of tokens of affection you need to win the game. That's it. It sounds simple, but there is a great amount of strategy and some deduction that occurs to make this game interesting on every round.

One of the funniest situations that happens is this: If a "4" is played (a Handmaid), this prevents any card effects being played against you. The number "5" card (the Prince) requires that either another player discard his/her hand and then draw another card. If the Handmaid is protecting all other players, the Prince must be played on the person that played the Prince, which requires that the person that played the Prince must discard the card in his/her hand. However, the laughter comes into play when the other card is the Princess herself (the number 8 card) since the card says that if she is discarded, then that player is out of that round! That has only happened once with us so far, but boy was that funny! Haha!

Rounds take about 5 minutes, but you'll play multiple rounds until the number of tokens of affection have been acquired by a player. This is a great game for families.

My 6-year old daughter received this as a gift from the "gamer" in my family. There was some concern that it was a little too "out there" for everyone to enjoy.
      We were wrong.
The game is an excellent introduction to deductive, strategic card play. With only 16 cards and all discards played face up, it is a good learning tool for process of elimination.
There is not a whole lot of strategy. You're choice of discard is sometimes made for you based on the cards in your hand at the time. What strategy there is is dependent on whether you can figure out what card your opponent(s) is holding.
Rounds are quick. The game can be picked up and continued easily (great for waiting at the gate to board a plane).
The biggest downside is that cheating is pretty easy to get away with as there are times when an opponent has to answer what their card is truthfully. It is the same problem the game "Go Fish" has ("Do you have any 6s? Your opponent answers, "No." when they actually do have them.) If someone in the game is good at counting cards and tracking card movement, then you can catch them pretty quickly, and ultimately, it isn't the game's fault that you're playing with a cheater. ;)

I liked it enough I bought 4 more copies to give as gifts. Perfect game for simple play but has enough strategy that it is not just the random luck of UNO card game.

This has got to be one of the best games ever!
I have never played this game with someone and have them not like it, it's simple yet complex enough to be very entertaining. It is easy to pick up, very well thought out.
The only thing I wish is that it could be played with more players, 3-4 is best 5 is a stretch.
My friends and I play this often, it is very dynamic comments and gestures can easily give you away and we have even nicknamed certain plays. Baroning someone when you carry a priest (Playing a baron you compare hands and high card wins, the priest is a 2 so only a guard is lower than him and its a very illogical play and hard to pull) is called a Judas Priest, There's also the Red Baron and so on.

Get sleeves, the cards are fragile and any markings will kill the game, once you can identify the card from the back the game is kind of dead.

This is my second copy of the game. I iniitally bought the bagged version and was wishing I had the boxed version for easier storage. To be honest, I think the bagged version is the better way to go. This is one of those games you want to toss in your pocket and take to a coffee shop, or play at a resturant while waiting for your meal. It's very light, takes minimal table space to play, and each round is so fast that it's easy to pack up and go in a moment's notice. For the very simple mechanic, I find LL to be an excellent two player game. It's not very deep, but a good time waster that never seems to get old. There are so many variations of this game on the market now. I personally find this particular theme to be best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised how much our 8 year old (and the rest of the family) loves this game.

      Wow. Find of the year.
I researched small games suitable for family Christmas gifts and this ranked highly, so I ordered it and immediately doubted its suitability for my 8 year old daughter. Luckily, all doubts were completely unfounded as she loved the style of this game, and I was thrilled with the quality of the pieces.
There are only 16 cards so you wouldn't think you'd get so much enjoyment out of this game, but it is suitably challenging (yet simple to learn) for our family of girl 8, boy 10 and two parents to enjoy an hour or so playing together. You could easily play much shorter games so I've given this a 5 star rating as it's just the perfect family game for either a game-day pay session, or a quick before-bed family game time.
Note: Personally I would swoon if this was given to me as a Valentine's/Anniversary/romantic getaway gift.... hint hint nudge nudge

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to learn, but truly a complex game

After receiving the game and playing it several times, I must say that this game is very fun. It is simple enough to understand that people young and old will have little trouble figuring it out, but it manages to be quite the mind-game. It is a test of mental prowess, deduction, risk-taking, and skill.

If you only have two players, I could see the game being a bit too quick and bland to fully enjoy, but 3-4 players allows for fun, contained games. You get to exercise your brain without over-thinking. Essentially, you're going to have two choices on every turn and what you need to do is guage which option is the best based on the past as well as the possible futures.

Love Letter is truly a really fun game that can be played as shallow (or deeply) as each individual wants.

I bought this game to play with my girlfriend. She doesn’t like trying out new games, so I had to twist her arm; but once we’d completed a game, she immediately wanted to play again. She actually brought the game to her university, and now many of her classmates are hooked on it too. They’re talking about running a Love Letter tournament now.

This game’s strength is in its puny size. It’s cheap to buy, you don’t have to commit much time to a game, nor do you have to spend a long time figuring it out. In spite of its size, there’s a ton of fun packed into this 16 card deck, and I would highly recommend it!
