They are very comfortable. I especially like the toe "wiggle" space.
I think the best way I can explan these shoes is through my experience with my other shoes.
I have had nurses mates, recently bought dansko clogs and have used various clogs and crocs so far.
Clogs including dansko are too hard and don't help my plantar fascitis. They also hurt my toes when I walk alot (esp hard on feet if walking fast which I have to do quite a lot). Nurses mates were great while they lasted but I find they fell apart too quickly (1 year of regular daily use) and out of all my shoes caused most twisted ankle incidents.
Dansko are by far the best quality shoes I own. The edges are so smooth they don't hurt or rub anywhere. They are great for the back (arch support). But the sole is hard and if you do a lot of walking your feet will not be greatful. This is the main benefit of the alegria shoes - heavenly soft. I can walk and even run for a bit without hurting my toes. Even my pantar fascitis seems to be getting better when I wear them in place of the shoes I have. I also like the metatarsal support they offer. Have not experienced any back pain with them.
So why 4 stars?
The edges are somewhat "sharp" and esp initially they rub at the heal a lot. It's leather so it does soften up and they are comfy now but compared to dansko edges these can not compare.
* great looks and all the different styles
* good arch and metatarsal support
* roomy toe area
* rough edges
Bottom line is that I haven't found that 5 star shoe but so far these are my go to shoes.
The sizing can be tricky. In my experience, I wear a solid 9 in most shoes, sometimes even a 9.5, but only if a shoe runs a little small. All 4 of my Alegrias (the Paloma, the Classic clog, the Belle, and the Kaitlyn) are sized 39. In the classic clog I have plenty of room, especially once they got worn in (i wear these all the time in the house because of my heel issue). The Paloma fits like a dream. The Kaitlyn has a slightly different insole so it feels smaller, but not too small as my toes aren't touching the end. The Belle almost felt too small at first, but after a day of wearing they broke in and now I don't notice my toes touching the end like they did the first day.
Now for the solution to the squeak that some have complained about. The squeak originates in the sole of the shoe from the insole rubbing against the inside of the shoe itself. If you remove the insole and coat the bottom of it with a silicone lubricant like you can get at a hardware store or auto supply store, it will cease the squeak. All four of my pairs developed the squeak after a few days of wear. After spraying the bottom of the insoles 3 of them no longer squeak at all. The classic clogs still squeak, but I believe the issue with those is different. The squeak seems to originate on the top of the shoe where the leather strap rubs against the decorated cork top (they are the classic cork black pull up design). I don't know how long this fix lasts, but so far it's been a few weeks since I sprayed mine and they are still squeak free.
