The sizing can be tricky. In my experience, I wear a solid 9 in most shoes, sometimes even a 9.5, but only if a shoe runs a little small. All 4 of my Alegrias (the Paloma, the Classic clog, the Belle, and the Kaitlyn) are sized 39. In the classic clog I have plenty of room, especially once they got worn in (i wear these all the time in the house because of my heel issue). The Paloma fits like a dream. The Kaitlyn has a slightly different insole so it feels smaller, but not too small as my toes aren't touching the end. The Belle almost felt too small at first, but after a day of wearing they broke in and now I don't notice my toes touching the end like they did the first day.
Now for the solution to the squeak that some have complained about. The squeak originates in the sole of the shoe from the insole rubbing against the inside of the shoe itself. If you remove the insole and coat the bottom of it with a silicone lubricant like you can get at a hardware store or auto supply store, it will cease the squeak. All four of my pairs developed the squeak after a few days of wear. After spraying the bottom of the insoles 3 of them no longer squeak at all. The classic clogs still squeak, but I believe the issue with those is different. The squeak seems to originate on the top of the shoe where the leather strap rubs against the decorated cork top (they are the classic cork black pull up design). I don't know how long this fix lasts, but so far it's been a few weeks since I sprayed mine and they are still squeak free.
I'll leave my original review in case Alegria ever changes their ways and offers some type of support. I meant all the things I said, but it means nothing if the shoes only are wearable for a month and a half before the straps shred and pop open while you're walking. And if the straps are open, the shoes are fairly unwearable. They aren't forgiving of loose straps, and the velcro doesn't look a bit replaceable, the way it's sewn in.
Break them in and they are gold. Great for metatarsal problems and orthotics. 1st of all I read enough Amazon reviews to know what to do when I got them in term of breaking them in. They cut into the top of my foot above the strap. I took them off, shoved some shoe stretchers and socks in them and left them overnight. Next day they were better, but still irritated my foot, so I repeated: stuff some shoe stretchers and some socks in them and left them overnight. Haven't had a problem since! They are leather and stretch, so know that. Now they are totally comfy and you'll notice that most bad reviews complain about that, but people never broke them in and didn't know how to do that without wearing them and suffering through that process.
I can fit a Pedag half orthotic in it without even having to remove the insole or buy the wide insole inserts. They are that roomy. I wear these because I ripped a muscle under my metatarsals, the plantar plate, and it's been a year and I still have pain. They recommend you wear white, old-lady tennis shoes for the rest of your life basically, which is terrible and not even realistic. However, these shoes made for nurses and teachers and chefs (close-toed clog variety) are perfect for foot injuries. Rocker sole not clunky like Danskin clogs, which may make you trip and re-injur yourself or twist an ankle. And they come in suit cute designs to make up for having to wear just one cut forever.
I tried out these discounted ones to see if they really were all that, and now that I know that indeed, they are, I will get more in different patterns. Hope this helps someone!
The Alegrias fit more closely than the dansko; I've yet to run to a code and accidentally run out of my shoes! They aren't quite as high as the danskos, and they have a wider base. Again, a little more stable. Like the dansko/ sanitas they have what I believe is called a "Rocker bottom"; the design of the sole is meant to sort of propel you forward.
The sole is more cushioned than my danskos, and it has a removable innersole. You can use your own orthotic, which is a much-appreciated feature for those of use who need them.
As this was my first pair I ordered my size in a sale pattern. They're red patent leather with little owls. Really fun! I get a ton of comments on the pattern from patients and coworkers. The shoes are just so cheerful!
I've found the alegria paloma to be very supportive. I can wear them all shift without my feet hurting; what more can you say?
