a charismatic revelator and herald of a new age of freedom. Aleister Crowley's lasting influence can be seen in the counter-culture movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s and in many forms of alternative spirituality and popular culture. The essays in this volume offer crucial insight into Crowley's foundational role in the study of Western esotericism, new religious movements, and sexuality.

Review
"One would be hard-pressed to put together an assemblage of people to equal the scholars included in this collection-the cream of the crop of those esoteric scholars who have studied Crowley. The volume makes a significant contribution to esoteric studies and will set future debates about Crowley. It will be a must-read text for all esoteric scholars in the next generation."--J. Gordon Melton, Distinguished Professor of American Religious History, Baylor University

About the authors

I am an independent scholar of Western Esotericism and New Religious Movements. My current academic interests revolve around the interplay of neo-rosicrucianism, independent eucharistic church movements, theosophy, and freemasonry. My background for these studies is reflected in more than four decades of research and writing on the English synthetic occultist Aleister Crowley and his disciples Wilfred Talbot Smith, Charles Stansfeld Jones, C. F. Russell and Kenneth Grant.

Henrik Bogdan is Professor of Religious Studies at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, at the University of Gothenburg. He is the editor of the 'Oxford Studies in Western Esotericism' book series, and coeditor of the 'Palgrave Studies in New Religions and Alternative Spiritualities' series. Bogdan is associate editor of 'The Pomegranate: The International Journal of Pagan Studies', and book reviews editor of 'Aries: Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism'. He is a board member of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE).

of 'angles' of evaluation weave a solid overview of key periods and approaches that mr. Crowley undertook organically to further his
life's work and the development of the cogent religion know as Thelema. ....very readable, informative, and illuminating.
To publish a book in 2012 and not include at least one female scholar into the publication is problematic. One could argue: There had not been female scholars around - well, the publishers should have particularly approached female scholars within studies of Western Esotericism and thus not remain within there male circle of scholar-friends. Or, they should have asked themselves and hence in the introduction of the book, why studies of Western Esotericism brings about such a male dominated scholary discourse.
