When I wanted to make changes to one of the presets, the instructions were of minimal help. Although it attempts to explain how to do a task, the instructions are generic, fragmented, and wordy. From the time I opened the box until I finally figured out how to make simple changes, I have spent three weeks in trial and error and handwrote a dozen pages of my own notes, tables, and instructions, just so I can use the SR16 adequately. I have not even attempted to create anything new and cannot imagine the nightmare it would be. This has been a frustrating experience, to say it respectfully. The reasons I plowed through all this frustration were 1) customer ratings and comments, 2) the lack of a reasonably priced competitive drum machines, and 3) the sounds were actually good enough for my limited use (I’m a guitarist).
1) there are no options for drum intros and extros
2) you cannot throw in a drum fills randomly which is very restrictive during a live, spontaneous performance when you cannot keep track of which beat you’re on (the SR16 accepts two foot pedals)
3) the display is not backlit and is difficult to read under low light conditions as you’d expect in a performance
4) some buttons are dual function but unlabeled, some buttons are toggle, some are momentary, some are single function; you just have to memorize which does what
5) no trouble shooting guide
6) a step-reference user’s chart inconveniently affixed underneath the SR16 instead of printed in the Reference Guide or as a separate card
I’m giving the SR16 a rating of one star because, although a great sounding drum machine, it is useless if you cannot use it. The instructions barely bridge the gap between a great machine and a great useable machine. Unless you have plenty of undisturbed time, lots of patience, and undeterred to writing copious notes, I would not recommend this $150 machine for you.
As a musician that really doesn't care for playing with others as well as just a electronic-instrument enthusiast I decided on grabbing a drum machine rather than dealing with another person and their hefty drum kit when I started a band a few years ago. Within a minutes I was rolling! I was jamming with dozens of different drums (of which MOST of the sounds are decent sounding and usable if you're a rock/punk/metal musician), recording beats and generally just enjoying my time with the device.
This device has built in beats that are great for practicing/writing to as well as 50 empty slots to record your own beats (which includes Part A, Part A Fill, Part B and Part B fill all of which are very easy to maneuver among using a single foot switch which you can pick up cheap separately). I pushed this thing the extra mile though and ended up recording two albums with it and performing numerous live shows. Not once did this thing screw up or fail the band over the course of roughly 3 years. Although I'm in the process of using more advanced drum machines/production softwares now this device still comes in handy for coming up with ideas, practicing to and just jamming on the drum pads.
This is an incredibly versatile and powerful machine. If you're a beginner or just seeking to expand on your drum machine arsenal I can't recommend this guy enough.
I will name some cons though. This is a great device with a few flaws. They don't ruin the product by any means but buyers should be aware of these things:
-The cable it came with was poorly made and broke easily. I recommend reinforcing it with electrical tape when you get it because....
-ALESIS CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS AWFUL. When my cable broke I had to deal with this company ignoring my emails and trying to charge me for a new cable even when a new one was covered under warranty. I eventually got one from them for free but the hassle was still annoying.
-No back light. This isn't a deal breaker but I had to bring a flashlight with me when performing live because venues are pretty dark and the screen is hard to see
-OCCASIONALLY (I have no clue what causes it) I make a drum beat and certain drum hits will cut out. This forces me to have the change the beat. Sometimes changing the drum sound fixes it. It's very strange but it's so rare that I didn't affect much of my work.

Now the not so good news: It's not easy to play patterns in real time on the key pads - I find I need to use the step edit function to clean up my real-time patterns. Also, I'm still struggling to understand the key sequences to adjust some parameters, and I find myself referring to the manual regularly. If there's a logic to it then I can't see it. I expect that these key sequences will gradually become second nature, but until then this is a niggle. It would be a great enhancement to be able to link to a PC with a full screen editor. For example, the editor for the Line 6 Pod range is excellent.
Conclusion: Buy it for the excellent sounding samples and useful onboard effect.
rock guitar players. I think the SR 18 would have been better for me, however i returned it via the amazon policy with no problems at all.
I have not tried another drum machine yet, this time i will do bit more research.
very pleased with it.
